4 Unsung Heroes for Illinois Football This Season
Oct 31, 2026 12:00 PM

Illinois football is still in the hunt for a prime bowl game, and these players are a big reason why.

Coach Bret Bielema's Illinois Fighting Illini are 4-3 on the 2026 college football season, 2-2 in the Big Ten heading into today's road game against the Maryland Terrapins.

The Fighting Illini's season started off on the wrong foot with an unexpected, hard-fought loss to the Duke Blue Devils at Gies Memorial Stadium in Champaign, Ill., which set the tone for the rest of the year.

A tough road loss to the Ohio State Buckeyes showed how far Illinois has to go in order to reach a national championship level. A subsequent hangover and loss to the Purdue Boilermakers caused bandwagon fans to jump ship, but the Fighting Illini have continued onward, undeterred.

Recently, they won two games without starting quarterback Katin Houser, who broke his right throwing hand against the Michigan State Spartans. The Fighting Illini have shown plenty of fight lately, especially among their lesser-known players, who have supported the stars this season.

Here are four unsung heroes who deserve more attention amid Illinois' run toward the top half of the Big Ten.

1. Aidan Laughery, RB

Laughery has taken over as the team's starting running back with Ca'Lil Valentine sidelined due to injury. The Fighting Illini starter broke off a huge run against Oregon to make the score 10-7 before halftime, giving Illini a fighting chance in a game that looked like it would be an easy Oregon victory.

The Laughery touchdown run spanned 75 yards and came just over two minutes before halftime. It was emblematic of the fight coach Bret Bielema's team has shown all season long, and of Laughery's never-say-die attitude.

2. Ty Robinson, WR

Robinson hasn't been heard from much since his Hail Mary touchdown reception against the UAB Blazers in Week 1, but the play is so big it landed him a spot on this list.

Robinson has been an exemplary teammate throughout the season who has chipped in when necessary, culminating in totals of 12 catches for 164 yards and three touchdowns heading into the Maryland game.

The Fighting Illini receiver is a team player through and through who gives effort as a blocker on running plays and remains a big play threat despite his modest production.

He deserves more looks as the season progresses and the Illini head toward bowl season.

3. Ethan Moczulski, PK

Moczulski hasn't gotten much attention because of the Illinois offense, injuries, and other news items, but he's been solid-to-great all-around season as Illinois' placekicker.

Moczulski has made all 24 of his extra points this season and made 10 of 12 field goals including 2-of-3 from 50+ yards and 5-of-5 from 40-49 yards.

Those numbers have given Bielema confidence in his kicker with the game on the line and from long distance, attributes that could help him win Bielema's team a big game or two down the stretch.

4. Ismael Kante, OLB

Kante is Illinois' second-leading tackler on the season with 44, five behind Matthew Bailey, one of six Fighting Illini team captains.

He snagged an interception that he returned 59 yards for a touchdown and has teamed with James Kreutz to form one of the better linebacking duos in the Big Ten heading down the stretch run of the 2026 season.

Kante hasn't made a ton of big plays this season, but he's a glue guy who holds Illinois' defense together in times of turbulence. He deserves more credit as a player Big Ten fans should know on a first and last-name basis with Illinois poised to make a run at a prime bowl game.
