Katin Houser is critical to the Fighting Illini's success in 2026.
Luke Altmyer was a reliable quarterback for the Fighting Illini, leading his team to a 23-12 record over his three seasons in Champaign. Illinois won't be able to lean on No. 9 again this year, turning to East Carolina transfer Katin Houser in what some are expecting to be a transition year.
Houser has improved each year of his collegiate career. That culminated in his 2025 performance with the Pirates, in which he completed 65.9% of his passes for 3,300 yards, tossed 19 touchdowns to six picks and added nine scores on the ground. Now a graduate transfer, Houser will look to use his final year of eligibility to lead the Illini to their third consecutive win in a bowl game.
Opposing teams seem to believe in Houser's abilities entering the 2026 season. A survey from The Athletic used interviews from approximately three dozen college coaches, general managers, personnel directors, scouts and front office staffers to rank all 136 projected FBS starting quarterbacks, and Houser's ranking should give Illinois fans optimism.
The survey listed Houser as the 41st-best quarterback in college football. That slotted him into Tier 4 of seven, which features inexperienced passers, veterans looking to redeem themselves and "journeymen looking to make the most of their last stops." Houser, who began his career at Michigan State before transferring to East Carolina and Illinois, falls into the latter category.

"He’s also a really accurate passer with a wealth of experience (26 career starts, including seven at Michigan State in 2023). Those factors made him attractive in the portal this offseason. His fit at Illinois, which isn’t exactly known for an up-tempo offense, raises some questions."
The passage included a quote from a personnel director in the American Conference, which cast doubt on Houser's fit with Illinois' scheme and suggested the former ECU passer would've been better in the Big 12.
Among 18 Big Ten quarterbacks, Houser was 13th, ahead of only the passers for Michigan State, Northwestern, Iowa, Rutgers and Purdue. In last season's preseason quarterback rankings, the East Carolina starting quarterback was No. 92 in the nation, although that was coming off a season in which he tossed a career-high 11 interceptions.
Illinois has four other quarterbacks on its roster, but each of them is either a redshirt or true freshman. Houser is the only one who offers collegiate experience, and if the Illini want a chance at reaching the College Football Playoff, the graduate transfer will need his best year yet.
