Tyronn Lue has a plan worked out for his top five draft pick this season.

Los Angeles Clippers coach Tyronn Lue has 11 years under his belt leading NBA teams, including four seasons with the Cleveland Cavaliers and seven with his current team.

Lue, known for his speed, defense and three-point shooting during his playing days, has a winning record as coach at both NBA stops.

On Wednesday, Lue revealed his ambitious plans for rookie first-round draft pick Keaton Wagler, the latter of whom is fresh off of a Final Four season with the Illinois Fighting Illini basketball program.

Wagler in the Spotlight

Wagler was a high-usage player as a freshman with the Fighting Illini and could find himself in a similar situation with the Clippers as a rookie. He has gained attention for being "cerebral" on the practice court and for his advanced skill in pick-and-roll situations.

Coach Lue was asked to discuss how many opportunities Wagler could get this season.

"Yeah, a lot of opportunities, because he's a great pick-and-roll player," he said according to reporter Joey Linn.

"Just mixing it up when he's bringing it up the floor, when he's catching the ball with a live dribble, running pick and rolls. Just give him different looks. We know he's a great pick-and-roll player so we want to make sure we use him the right way."

The Clippers ran pick-and-rolls on 15.1% of their plays last season, ranking toward the middle of the NBA pack. Wagler brings a tall, versatile ball handler who thrives on pick-and-rolls and had great success running them with the Fighting Illini last season.

He will play alongside defensive stopper Kris Dunn in the back court, giving the Clippers an interesting guard combination capable of covering for each other's weaknesses.

Wagler a Rookie of the Year Dark Horse?

Wagler is generally not listed in the top five among Rookie of the Year candidates by most sportsbooks, an oddity considering he was drafted in the top five.

The former Fighting Illini guard has all of the tools and experience necessary to thrive in year one, including a big game pedigree forged during last year's NCAA Tournament run.

The Clippers will have an opportunity to play Wagler alongside former star guard Bradley Beal, who is one of the NBA's better scoring guards when healthy. Beal and Wagler look like a good fit in the Clippers' back court, giving Wagler a chance to shift between lead scoring guard and facilitator whenever Beal is in the game.

Wagler looks like a long shot to win the award considering how good players like AJ Dynantsa and Darryn Peterson are, but he will almost certainly put up strong numbers for a rookie with Lue liking his game so far and the Clippers in need of more scoring.
