COLLEGE PARK, Md. — Indiana has won 10 straight games at home to start the season, but things have not gone well away from Bloomington. So it was important that the Hoosier made a statement on Wednesday night at Maryland.
Consider the statement made.
The Hoosiers used an efficient offensive attack in the second half to run away with an 84-66 victory over the struggling Terrapins. Indiana is now 12-3 overall and 3-1 in Big Ten play. Guard Lamar Wilkerson led the way with 24 points — including 18 in the second half — and running mates Tayton Conerway (19) and Conor Enright (16) were also in doule figures.
Center Reed Bailey added 15 off the bench, with nine of those coming in a big second half. It was their first true road win after losses at Minnesota and Kentucky. Indiana also 1-1 in neutral-site games, beating Marquette in the first week of the season in Chicago and losing to Louisville in Indianapolis on Dec. 6.
This was better. Much better.
"We've only had a couple of opportunities (on the road) and we know we didn't maybe perform as well as we would have liked in those two games,'' Indiana coach Darian DeVries told the media after the game. "But there were also learning opportunities for us in those losses that I think we adjusted nicely to.
"We got off to a slow start tonight, and I thought we took some of the things that maybe hindered us from coming away with a win in our first two road games and were able to fix it, which is great to see. It’s a sign of a veteran group.”
Indiana took a 36-31 lead to the half despite shooting just 9-for-26 from the field, and 2-of-12 from three. But they attacked the basket throughout, and got to the free throw line. They made all 16 free throws. Conerway, who had 18 first-half points in Sunday's win vs. Washington, had 13 against the Terps, making four field goals and all four of this free throw attempts.
Indiana broke the game open with a 13-2 run early in the second half, grabbing a 52-40 lead. Wilkerson hit three three-pointers during the run, and was fouled on one of them, hitting the free throw to make it a four-point play.
“We got him in a little more actions, a little bit more on the move,” DeVries said. “And then, because of that, we could use some of that movement now to put some counter moves or counter plays that we have to try to get him free. And I thought the guys did a really good job of looking for him, screening for him, and giving him those opportunities.”
Indiana maintained a double-digit lead the rest of the way, and pushed the lead to 18 on several occasions. They scored 48 points in the second half.
Maryland has been struggling under first-year coach Buzz Williams, and had another tough night against the Hoosiers. They made just 5-of-26 three-point attempts — a mere 19 percent average — and got outrebounded by Indiana 41-33. The Terrapins are now 7-8 overall and 0-4 in the Big Ten. They are one of three league teams that have yet to win a conference game, along with Northwestern and Penn State.
Indiana is back in action on Saturday, taking on No. 10 Nebraska at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall. The Cornhuskers are still unbeaten, 15-0 overall with four straight Big Ten wins.
