COLLEGE PARK, Md. — Indiana had the luxury of an easy-ish early season Big Ten schedule this year, with their first four games all against teams in the bottom third of the league.
Indiana is 2-1 so far in conference play, with home wins over Penn State and Washington, and a road loss at Minnesota. The last game of that stretch is Wednesday night, when the Hoosiers take on Maryland — a team that's still winless in the Big Ten — in College Park.
Indiana has been very good at home so far, winning all 10 games at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall but going just 1-3 elsewhere. That includes a win over Marquette in Chicago and a loss to Louisville in Indianapolis in neutral-site game and road losses at Minnesota and Kentucky.
Winning away from home is critical if the Hoosiers want to be an NCAA Tournament team at the end of the year. Especially after letting a game slip away at Minnesota — Indiana once had a x-point second half lead — they need to get this win at Maryland. Wins could be harder to come by in the next three weeks, with five of their next six games against nationally ranked opponents.
"Every night (in the Big Ten), it's a rock fight. We know that. We have to be ready for that,'' Indiana coach Darian DeVries said Sunday night after the win over Washington. "I think our guys understand that.
"The nonconference season I think has gotten us ready. The few conference games we've had have gotten us ready. Now it's about going out and doing it.''
Here's how to watch Wednesday night's game, with game times and TV information, plus the latest on the point spread:
Who: Indiana Hoosiers (11-3, 2-1 in Big Ten) at Maryland Terrapins (7-7, 0-3 in Big Ten).
What: Big Ten conference regular season game of the year.
When: Wednesday, Jan. 7, 6:30 p.m. ET.
Where: Xfinity Center, College Park, Md.
TV: Big Ten Network — Jason Horowitz (play-by-play), Steve Smith (analyst)
Radio: IU Radio Network — Don Fischer (play-by-play), Errek Suhr (analyst), John Herrick
Point spread: Indiana is an 7.5-point favorite over Maryland, and the over/under is 147.5 points, according to the Fanduel.com gambling website.
Series history: Indiana leads the all-time series, 14-10. The Hoosiers are 4-5 on the road in the series. The two teams met for the 2002 national title, with Maryland winning its lone national championship. Neither team has made a Final Four since.
Last meeting: Maryland won 79-78 on Jan. 26, 2025 in Bloomington behind 23 points from Rodney Rice. Myles Rice, who now plays at Maryland, led the Hoosiers with 16 points. Mackenzie Mgbako also had 16. It was the second loss in a five-game losing streak for Indiana that basically sealed the fate of former Indiana coach Mike Woodson, who was let go at the end of the season.
1. HOOSIERS IN 'MUST-WIN' MODE?: Maryland has struggled so far this season, and with games against five ranked teams in the next three weeks, Indiana really has to get this one. The Terrapins also have a completely rebuilt roster, and they've been slow to put it together. They've lost all three Big Ten games — to Iowa, Michigan and Oregon. They also have four nonconference losses, to Georgetown, Gonzaga, Alabama and Virginia. All but Georgetown were ranked.
2. REBOUNDING GETTING BETTER: Indiana plays small and they don't have bangers inside on their roster. We knew rebounding was always going to be an issue for this team. But Indiana coach Darian DeVries said they worked on it a long during their long break, and it paid dividends in the win over Washington. "Yeah, I was really pleased,'' he said. "We spent a lot of time on it during this break in our practices, increasing our physicality and doing a better job there. Just more of getting that mindset. I thought our guys did a good job of staying with it, pursuing the ball.''
3. SEEING MYLES RICE AGAIN: Point guard Myles Rice is at his third school in three years, playing for the Terrapins after a year at Indiana. He started his career at Washington State. He's played in 10 games so far for the Terrapins, starting three, and he's missed four games with an ankle injury. He's averaging 7.9 points a game, with the highlight a 16-point effort against Wagner on Dec. 2. Rice has played 180 minutes so far, and has committed just four turnovers. This is the second former Hoosier we've seen this week. Rice's former IU teammate, Bryson Tucker, had 11 points for Washington on Sunday.
