BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Indiana has hit the skids, with three ugly losses to Illinois, Purdue and Northwestern in the past three weeks. The first two were tolerable, the loss on Tuesday to the lowly Wildcats devastating.
The Hoosiers get a chance at redemption, though, with No. 13 Michigan State coming to Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall on Sunday. A win over the Spartans would cure a lot of ills.
Here's how to watch Sunday's nationally televised game, along with three really cool newsy nuggets:
Who: Michigan State Spartans (23-51, 13-4 in Big Ten) at Indiana Hoosiers (17-11, 8-9 in Big Ten)
What: Big Ten conference regular season game.
When: Sunday, March 1, 3:45 p.m. ET.
Where: Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall, Bloomington, Ind.
TV: CBS — Ian Eagle (play-by-play), Bill Raftery (analyst), Tracy Wolfson (sideline).
Radio: IU Radio Network — Don Fischer (play-by-play), Errek Suhr (analyst), John Herrick
Point spread: Pending.
Series history: Indiana leads the series 74-60. Indiana has won two straight games in against Michigan State in Bloomington and four of the last five games played in Assembly Hall.
Last meeting: Michigan State beat Indiana 81-60 on Jan. 13, 20265 in East Lansing, Mich. Michigan State is one of three Big Ten teams that the Hoosiers play twice this season. Purdue and Minnesota are the others. The January loss was the first by 20-plus points this season, but the Hoosiers have had two more in the past two weeks, losing by 20 at Illinois and 29 at Purdue. Lamar Wilkerson led the Hoosiers with 19 points in the loss at East Lansing. He was the only Hoosier in double figures. Point guard Jeremy Fears Jr. led the Spartans with 23 points.
1. TOM IZZO, LEGEND: Bob Knight held most of the Big Ten coaching records when he finished his coach career and Indiana in 2000. But Tom Izzo has reeled him in since then. Knight, who finished with 353 Big Ten wins, was passed a few weeks ago by Izzo, who now has 356. The 71-year-old Izzo has been the head coach at Michigan State since 1995 and has 760 career wins, all at Michigan State. That's the most in Big Ten history, too, for a coach at a conference school. Knight still leads in national titles, of course. He has three, and Izzo has just one, in 2000. It's the last time a Big Ten school won an NCAA title.
2. HOOSIERS' ODD SUCCESS vs. MSU: Since 2019, Indiana is 6-5 against Michigan State, which is something of a surprise because the Hoosiers have been behind the Spartans in the Big Ten in six of those seven seasons. Even more surprising, in those six wins, the Hoosiers were favored only twice. Indiana is 4-1 in the last five at Assembly Hall, which is a good sign heading into Sunday's showdown.
3. HUGE STAKES FOR HOOSIERS: Indiana is 5-3 at home so far in the Big Ten, beating Purdue, Wisconsin, Penn State, Washington and Maryland, with losses to Nebraska, Iowa and Northwestern. Tuesday's loss to the Wildcats really hurt the Hoosiers' NCAA Tournament chances, but getting a Quad-1 win against MSU would practically erase that bad loss. Indiana has one more home game on Wednesday, against Minnesota, and finishes the regular season on Saturday at Ohio State.
