EAST LANSING, Mich. — Tom Izzo has a lot of history with Indiana basketball through his 31 years as the head coach at Michigan State. His first-ever Big Ten win came against Bob Knight in 1996. But when he sees the Hoosiers on Tuesday night, he won't recognize much.
Indiana has a new coach in Darian DeVries, and an entire roster of new players. Izzo has no history in playing against them, which makes preparation a bit unique for a conference game.
"Wilkerson is a big thing, his kid (Tucker DeVries) is a big thing. They've got a lot of guys that can score the ball and they shoot a lot of threes. They are very well coached and it's a good team,'' Izzo said. "DeVries is a good player and he's a matchup problem because he plays the four.
"It's a little more prep for us because we know nothing about them. They shoot a lot of threes, and it's a big part of their game. It's complete different, and it feels (like more of a nonconference game). When you think of the Big Ten, Indiana is one of the first names of you think of. It doesn't matter though. This is a new team for us, but they do a lot of good things and they are a good team.''

1. SPARTANS OFF TO GREAT START: It's no surprise that Tom Izzo is getting the most out of this Michigan State roster. They've been playing well all year, with just two defeats. Their only losses are to No. 4 Duke in December, and at unbeaten Nebraska last week, where they fell 58-56. And even though they're a game behind Nebraska and Purdue in the Big Ten race at the moment, there's no doubt they are going to be in the race until the end.
2. JEREMY FEARS RUNS THE SHOW: After Purdue's Braden Smith, Michigan State sophomore point guard Jeremy Fears Jr., might be the best floor leader in the league. He's smart, he's explosive and he can do it all on the floor. He's averaging 12.1 points and 8.8 assists per game, which ranks No. 2 in the country behind Smith (9.8 apg). Indiana has a guard-oriented team this year — a departure from Mike Woodson teams of years gone by — so it will be interesting to see how they deal with Fears.
3. EMERGENCE OF JAXON KOHLER: Jaxon Kohler is in his fourth season under Izzo at Michigan State and he's slowly turned himself into a star. The 6-foot-9 forward from American Fork, Utah, is leading Michigan State in both scoring (14.3 ppg) and rebounds (10.1) and is one of only three Big Ten players who are averaging a double-double. Trey Kaufman-Renn of Purdue and Hannes Steinbach of Washington are the others.
