Markus Burton led the way with 19 points and five assists as the Hoosiers showcased their depth, defensive pressure and offensive versatility in a convincing opening-night victory.

Indiana basketball opened the 2026-27 season in impressive fashion Monday night, cruising to a 91-57 victory over Eastern Illinois at Assembly Hall.

Head coach Darian DeVries had plenty to like about his team's performance, particularly its offensive efficiency, depth and defensive intensity during a dominant first half. The Hoosiers jumped out to a 44-23 halftime advantage and never allowed the Panthers to seriously threaten.

Markus Burton led the way with 19 points on 7-of-8 shooting, including a perfect 3-of-3 performance from beyond the arc. Burton also dished out five assists against just one turnover, an encouraging showing for a player returning after an extended absence from game action.

"He's had a really good couple of weeks. His aggressiveness has really cranked up," DeVries said. "It's not just scoring. He's being aggressive and making plays."

Bryce Lindsay added 14 points while connecting on three of his five 3-point attempts. Freshman Trevor Manhertz contributed 11 points in just 15 minutes, while Sam Alexis and Tayton Conerway also provided valuable minutes off the bench.

DeVries was particularly complimentary of Manhertz, who showed flashes of his offensive potential in his collegiate debut.

"He has upside, and he's not even close yet to scratching it," DeVries said. "He's long, and he's got a great feel and IQ."

Indiana shot 50 percent from the field and connected on nine 3-pointers, but its aggressiveness attacking the basket was equally important. The Hoosiers attempted 32 free throws, making 24, and collected 13 offensive rebounds.

Defensively, Indiana forced 22 turnovers and converted those mistakes into 29 points. The Hoosiers also recorded 13 steals, with their defensive pressure helping fuel an 18-0 run during the opening half.

Indiana also dominated the fast-break battle, outscoring Eastern Illinois 20-6 in transition while holding a 40-31 advantage in bench points. That combination of depth and athleticism could become a major strength for the Hoosiers as the season progresses.

Still, DeVries wasn't entirely pleased with his team's defensive consistency, particularly after Eastern Illinois found success attacking the basket following halftime.

"They lived in our paint way too much in the second half," DeVries said. "We got messed up on some switches and some things we were working on there."

Perhaps the biggest takeaway was Indiana's depth. Nine Hoosiers played at least 15 minutes, allowing DeVries to consistently rotate fresh bodies without sacrificing much production.

For a roster still learning to play together, Monday's performance offered an encouraging starting point. There are certainly areas to clean up, particularly defensively, but Indiana showcased enough offensive firepower, athleticism and versatility to make its season-opening victory a convincing one.
