Using some analytics and taking a closer look at the entire game, here are some things that stood out in Indiana's win over Howard.
When you look at the final score in Indiana's win over Howard, it's obviously very impressive. Beating a team 55-0 is as close to a perfect outcome as a team can achieve. However, nothing is ever perfect in football, so it's alway s fun to take a deeper look at how the game played out. Indiana is 2-0, and has dominated through two weeks, and the film is showing that.
Using a tool like Pro Football Focus allows us to see what happened on a player-by-player basis and gives some insight as to how the game really went. It's not gospel, but there are some things that just don't show up in the box score that can tell another part of the story.
Top Three Offensive Performers (25 snap minimum)
1. WR Charlie Becker
It's pretty easy to understand why Becker comes in at No. 1 with an overall grade of 81.4. Becker caught three passes for 81 yards and all three of them went for touchdowns. As a wide receiver, catching balls and making plays is obviously job No. 1, and he did that to perfection, but he also graded out well as a run blocker. When you're getting that kind of effort out of your WR1, things are going well.
2. LG Joe Brunner
Brunner is about as big as they come at the guard position checking in at 6-7, 320 pounds. The former Wisconsin Badger finished with an overall grade of 80.0 and was very solid as a pass blocker and in the run game. He played 48 snaps before Curt Cignetti started getting some subs into the game and was rock solid for just about all of them. He was slightly better in pass pro, but was a major reason for Indiana's success on the ground as well.
3. WR Nick Marsh
Charlie Becker is going to get the headlines in this one because of his three touchdown grabs, but Marsh caught two passes for 71 yards and a score of his own, which was from 51 yards out. Marsh also graded out extremely high (78.4) as a run blocker. Indiana really got great downfield blocking from both of its big time receivers, which is why the run game was so effective.
Interesting Notes
It's crazy to see quarterback Josh Hoover so far down the list considering four of his six completions went for touchdowns, but he did complete just a shade over 50% of his passes and didn't rack up that many yards. Still, Indiana fans everywhere are happy he's their guy and he's been very good during the first two weeks of the season.
Indiana logged 62 offensive snaps total, but the starting offensive linemen only had to play 48, and Hoover only had to play 38. It's always great when you can absolutely blow a team out and get a bunch of rest for your main guys. Indiana was able to do just that.
The highest earned grade out of everyone was actually running back Turbo Richard with an 84.1. Richard only had to play 15 snaps as he shared duties with Lee Beebe Jr. and got to watch the latter part of the game from the sidelines. While on the field, however, he was extremely productive racking up 108 yards and a score on just 11 carries.
Wide receiver Tyler Morris was one of the highest graded players last week, but this week he brought up the rear with a grade of 49.6. He only played 20 snaps, didn't recored a catch and struggled as a run blocker.
