Using some analytics and taking a closer look at the entire game, here are some things that stood out in Indiana's win over North Texas.
When you look at the final score in Indiana's win over North Texas, it's obviously pretty impressive. Beating a team 52-16 seems like a perfect outcome, but in football, nothing is perfect. The Hoosiers are 1-0, and there was a lot to like about the opener, but some things can be cleaned up.
Using a tool like Pro Football Focus allows us to see what happened on a player-by-player basis and gives some insight as to how the game really went. It's not gospel, but there are some things that just don't show up in the box score that can tell another part of the story.
Top Three Offensive Performers (25 snap minimum)
1. QB Josh Hoover
It's not surprising to see Indiana's new quarterback up here in the top slot. Hoover had more touchdowns (4) than he did incompletions (3). Going 13-of-16 for 231 yards and four scores will almost always grade out well. Hoover was extremely efficient, took care of the ball and won everyone over by playing through a busted up nose after a crazy facemask situation.
The TCU transfer was billed as a bit of a gunslinger while in the transfer portal, but during his Indiana debut, he was dialed in and very safe with the ball. If he continues to take care of the ball, his weapons are going to make his job easy and his turnover issues will likely be a thing of the past.
2. WR Charlie Becker
It's also not surprising to see Becker up near the top of this grade sheet. The 6-4, 208-pounder has become one of college football's best playmakers. He's a downfield threat, a jump ball master and someone that Hoover clearly has trust in already.
He was on the field for all but six offensive snaps and made the most of his opportunities. He was targeted six times and caught four of those passes for 64 yards and two touchdowns. All four of his catches went for first down yardage showing just how important he is to Indiana's offense.
3. WR Tyler Morris
Becker was the big play guy, but Morris was old reliable. He caught all three of his targets for 35 yards, with two of them resulting in first downs. He was also the highest graded wide receiver when it came to run blocking per PFF. He's not the big name that Becker or Michigan State transfer Nick Marsh are, but he's going to be invaluable for Hoover this year.
Interesting Notes
Right guard Bray Lynch was the lowest-graded offensive lineman despite grading out quite well as a pass blocker. He struggled in the run game and also committed a penalty. On an offensive line that's expected to be very good, Lynch brought up the rear despite actually being pretty good overall.
Running back Khobie Martin was billed as a guy who would be heavily involved in the run game but he played just two snaps. Lee Beebe Jr. and Turbo Richard played 21 and 26 snaps respectively. It'll be interesting to see how that rotation evolves over the year.
Besides the starting offensive line and Hoover, Nick Marsh played the most snaps on offense with 43 out of 48. The former Spartan looks like a future first rounder and should compliment Becker perfectly.
