Using some analytics and taking a closer look at the entire game, here are some things that stood out in Indiana's win over Rutgers.
When you look at the final score in Indiana's win over Rutgers, it's hard to imagine that much went bad for the Hoosiers. Beating a conference opponent 47-15 sure looks like a dominant performance and, while it was that, IU head coach Curt Cignetti always finds things for his guys to do better. Indiana is now 5-0 without much resistance, and the film is showing a lot of good things.
Using a tool like Pro Football Focus allows us to see what happened on a player-by-player basis and gives some insight as to how the game really went. It's not gospel, but there are some things that just don't show up in the box score that can tell another part of the story.
Top Three Offensive Performers (25 snap minimum)
1. RB Turbo Richard - 91.1
Richard, who was listed as probably before the game, delivered an explosive performance out of the backfield, completely tearing through the defense to earn the highest PFF grade on the entire offense. On just 13 carries, he racked up a massive 204 rushing yards and a touchdown, averaging a ridiculous 15.7 yards per carry with a long of 57 yards. He also had a four-yard catch. He played a total of 36 snaps and was a problem for Rutgers all night long. On top of his work as a runner, he held his own in pass protection with a 74.7 pass-blocking grade across his limited reps.
2. WR Nick Marsh - 86.4
Marsh was the primary target through the air, grading out as Indiana's second-best player. Lined up at wide receiver across 54 total snaps (25 pass, 29 run-block) he led the team in receiving yards with 120 and a touchdown on seven catches. His high-level execution on routes earned him an 88.4 receiving grade, largely driving by his ability to create after the catch with 53 yards after the catch and a long reception of 30 yards.
3. WR Charlie Becker - 78.7
Becker was equally dominant on the outside, serving as the go-to red-zone and volume target to earn a strong 78.7 overall PFF grade. Playing a receiver-high 60 snaps on the outside, Becker pull in a team-leading eight receptions for 107 yards and two touchdowns. Backed by a 78.3 pass grade, his biggest moment came on a 48-yard burst as he consistently stretched the defense while maintaining solid run-blocking effort across 31 snaps.
Interesting Notes
Lee Beebe Jr. was listed as questionable ahead of the game but he looked just fine. He gave Indiana an equally efficient ground threat alongside Richard earning a 76.2 overall grade. On 18 carries, he racked up 122 yards and a touchdown making the Indiana backfield dynamic from top to bottom.
Wide receiver Davion Chandler played just 20 total snaps but recorded the 3rd-highest overall grade on the team at 80.6. He was targeted twice, catching both passes for 7 yards and a touchdown. He wasn't a big part of the offensive gameplan, but he made his mark.
Tight end Trevor Gibbs didn't have his best game. Despite seeing heavy field time with 53 total snaps, Gibbs finished with the lowest overall grade among rotational regulars at 49.8. He wasn't targeted in the passing game and struggled as an in-line blocker with a 53.6 run-blocking grade.
