Indiana’s neutral-site contest against Marquette went better than even the most optimistic fan could’ve expected. The Hoosiers won 100-77 in the Waterkeeper Alliance Invitational at the United Center in Chicago.
Indiana (2-0) got a resounding victory over Marquette (2-1), which has made four straight NCAA tournaments. Indiana coach Darian DeVries has the Hoosiers rolling to begin his first season at the helm of the program.
Indiana was led in the win by Tucker DeVries. Tucker DeVries — a forward who joined his dad at Indiana after playing just eight games at West Virginia last season — scored 28 points with 24 coming in the first half. Tucker DeVries scored at all three levels of the floor and helped the Hoosiers get out to an 18-point halftime lead, and Marquette never got close in the second half.
Tucker DeVries is averaging 23 points in his first two games as a Hoosier. The two-time Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year has brought his scoring prowess to Indiana and made a tangible difference. We’re only through a week of the season, but if Tucker DeVries continues to play at this level, he’ll be seen as one of the best players in the Big Ten (and the country).
As Tucker DeVries dealt with foul trouble in the second half, guard Lamar Wilkerson picked up the scoring load for the Hoosiers. Wilkerson finished with 23 points, 15 of which came in the second half. Marquette gave Tucker DeVries so much attention in the second half that it freed up Wilkerson — who might be the better shooter of the two — for repetitive open shots.
Wilkerson made four 3s in Indiana’s season opener, and he followed that by making six on Sunday. He’s a true flamethrower who’s comfortable shooting with any amount of space.
Indiana’s offense was firing on all cylinders for the second straight game. It was one thing for this team to put up 98 on Alabama A&M, a SWAC opponent, but to score over 90 points again versus Marquette confirms this offense has some firepower.
While Indiana brought in several skilled offensive players, there are still questions about whether this team’s lack of athleticism will be an issue inside the 3-point arc. But DeVries’ motion offense, which emphasizes great ball movement, generates open looks from inside the paint and outside the arc. In the first two regular-season games, the Hoosiers have shown a versatile offense that goes beyond 3-point shooting.
The Hoosiers finished with four players scoring in double figures: Tucker DeVries (28 points), Wilkerson (23), Trent Sisley (15) and Sam Alexis (13). The Hoosiers followed their 23-assist game against Alabama A&M with 27 assists.
Marquette committed 15 turnovers, as Indiana’s defense was disruptive again. Marquette’s offense looked rather sloppy (especially compared to Indiana’s), and the Hoosiers took advantage of that.
Indiana committed 25 fouls, and Marquette was in the bonus early in both halves. But on a team that doesn’t have much size, DeVries is risking foul issues and surrendering free throws in exchange for forcing turnovers. Three Hoosiers committed at least four fouls, but that didn’t stop them from overwhelming Marquette Sunday.
With four players out due to injury, Indiana still looked like a much better team. DeVries trotted out a rotation of only eight players, but Indiana’s lack of depth didn’t stop it from getting a convincing win.
Indiana’s regular season continues Wednesday when it hosts Milwaukee.
