Transfer portal season is heating up in college basketball, and Furman guard Marcus Foster has reportedly heard from the Indiana Hoosiers coaching staff.
Indiana is in the midst of a Big Ten Tournament run, but the coaching staff also has an eye toward the future.
Furman guard Marcus Foster has reportedly heard from Indiana since entering the transfer portal, according to 24/7 High School Hoops. Other schools in contact with Foster include Arkansas, Texas Tech, Gonzaga, Xavier and Dartmouth. On3's Joe Tipton added that Foster has also heard from Clemson, Richmond, Georgia, Gonzaga, Loyola Chicago, Texas, Kansas State and Florida State.
Foster is a 6-foot-4 guard with one year of remaining eligibility. The 2024-25 season will be Foster's sixth year in college.
Foster had his most productive season as a fifth-year senior in 2023-24, averaging 17.0 points, 7.5 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 1.0 steals per game. His 3-point shooting dropped to 29.7% on 6.9 attempts per game, and he shot 42.5% from the field and 81.3% at the free throw line. Foster was named to the All-Southern League second team.
He redshirted the 2019-20 season at Furman, then played 112 games with 80 starts across the next four seasons. Foster improved each season after averaging 2.7 points off the bench as a redshirt freshman. he averaged 8.5 points and 5.0 rebounds per game as a sophomore in 2021-22, while shooting 35.8% from the 3-point line.
Foster made another jump as a junior, scoring 10.6 points per game and shooting 36.1% on 5.0 3-point attempts per game. That year, Foster helped Furman earn a No. 13 seed in the NCAA Tournament, where the Paladins upset No. 4 seed Virginia in the Round of 64.
Across his 112-game career, Foster shot 42.9% from the field, 33.3% on 436 career 3-point attempts and 79% at the free throw line. Under coach Bob Richey, Furman finished third, second, first and fifth in the Southern League with one NCAA Tournament appearance during Foster's career.
Indiana is set to experience some roster turnover when this season ends, as Xavier Johnson and Anthony Walker will be out of eligibility. Center Kel'el Ware is currently projected to be a first-round NBA Draft pick, and it's reasonable to expect players at any program to enter the transfer portal nowadays.
Because Indiana left a scholarship open this season, it will have at least three scholarships to fill heading into next season. Indiana recently lost its only commitment in the 2024 high school recruiting class, as five-star small forward Liam McNeeley requested release from his national letter of intent. That will force coach Mike Woodson to look to the transfer portal or other high school decommitments to fill out the 2024-25 roster.
