With just four weeks left in the college football regular season, the race for the Heisman trophy continues to intensify. Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza is in the race to be the Hoosiers' first-ever Heisman winner, but he has competition with three games to go in the regular season.
Let's take a look at where Mendoza stands amongst the nation's other top players.

Sayin has surpassed Mendoza for the top Heisman spot. He's now the odds-on favorite to win the award after going 20-of-23 for 316 yards and four touchdowns against Penn State. Sayin has thrown 23 touchdowns and just three interceptions this year for the No. 1 Buckeyes, and he has gone five straight games without throwing an interception. Sayin leads the country in completion percentage (80.7%) and passer rating (197.1).

Mendoza continues to play exceptionally well for the Hoosiers. He went 14-of-21 for 201 yards passing with one passing touchdown, one interception and a rushing touchdown in Indiana's 55-10 win over Maryland. After being relatively mistake-free to start the season, Mendoza has thrown four interceptions in Indiana's last five games. Mendoza has still just thrown those five interceptions while leading the Big Ten with 25 touchdown passes (although Indiana has played one more game than Ohio State).
Mendoza's best statistical argument over Sayin is his rushing. The Hoosiers have used Mendoza as a dual-threat quarterback, as he has 220 yards rushing and four rushing touchdowns. Sayin has just 30 rushing yards and no touchdowns this season.

Simpson and Alabama are coming off a bye week. Simpson has thrown 20 touchdowns and just one interception. For the time being, Simpson's biggest knock is that he has lost a game as a starter, unlike Sayin, Mendoza and Texas A&M's Marcel Reed. The Crimson Tide host LSU this week.

Reed and the Aggies also had a bye this week. Reed has thrown 17 touchdowns and six interceptions this season. He has also run for 349 yards and six touchdowns. Texas A&M plays No. 19 Missouri this week.

Love has been excellent on the ground for No. 10 Notre Dame this year. He had 136 yards rushing and two touchdowns in the Fighting Irish's 25-10 win at Boston College this week. Love has 14 total touchdowns (11 rushing and three receiving) and is averaging 111.8 rushing yards per game. Love will ultimately be hurt by the fact that Notre Dame has two losses and no ranked teams remaining on its schedule.
