The former Kansas State edge rusher discusses his unexpected reunion with Chiddi Obiazor and how relentless practice intensity is fueling the Hoosiers’ dominant defensive front rotation.
Transitioning to a new football program comes with its share of challenges, but for Kansas State transfer Tobi Osunsanmi, the move to Indiana has been smooth sailing.
A big reason for that seamless adaptation has been the early focus on building team chemistry. Rather than sticking to comfortable routines or isolating themselves, Osunsanmi and his new teammates made a conscious effort to connect during the offseason. That early bond is already paying dividends as Indiana moves through its schedule.
Interestingly enough, Osunsanmi was not the only edge defender making the move from Manhattan to Bloomington. Chiddi Obiazor also joined the Hoosiers, though their path together was far from planned. Osunsanmi revealed that neither player discussed their transfer portal plans with the other while making their decisions. Both kept their cards close to their chest, aiming to make the smartest personal choices for their futures. It was not until Osunsanmi arrived on his official visit to Indiana that he spotted Chiddi Obiazor, realizing they were bound for the same destination.
While Chiddi Obiazor might not hold a starting spot on the defensive line, his presence has been vital to Osunsanmi’s growth. Having spent three years mastering the defensive scheme, Chiddi serves as a valuable sounding board. Osunsanmi regularly leans on him for advice, asking questions about play concepts and seeking feedback on technical execution. That veteran insight was on full display early in the Northwestern game when Chiddi delivered a textbook tackle in the end zone for a safety, sparking the team and giving the Hoosiers a dream start in front of an energized home crowd.
Reflecting on the defensive line’s performance through four weeks, Osunsanmi sees a unit loaded with potential that still has room to grow. When the front four minimize mental mistakes and execute cleanly, they are capable of dominating both the pass protection and the run game. Coming off a mixed performance against Northwestern where technique slipped slightly in the second half, the coaching staff has made sure intensity remains at a maximum. Osunsanmi noted that the fiery energy from coaches during practice ensures players are well prepared for high pressure moments on gameday.
Looking ahead to this week's clash with Rutgers, the instruction for the defensive front is straightforward: play physical, make fast decisions, and let the linebackers fly around to clean up plays behind them.
Off the field, Osunsanmi has also found strong camaraderie within the locker room. Spending the entire offseason as weight room rack partners with Joshua Burnham, the two developed a close bond built on shared humor and inside jokes. That tightness across the roster translates to the field, where veteran leaders like Lanell Carr Jr. and Mikail Kamara help keep the room aligned as one unit.
With strong chemistry, relentless practice intensity, and continuous technical refinement, Osunsanmi and the Indiana defensive line are poised to make noise as the season unfolds.
