Three Takeaways From Iowa State Football's Loss To Arizona
Oct 25, 2026 3:59 AM

Iowa State struggled on both sides of the ball on Saturday, falling 39-3 on the road to No. 25 Arizona.

Iowa State's trip to Tucson ended in disappointment on Saturday, as the Cyclones were limited offensively, while the No. 25 Arizona Wildcats used explosive passing plays and consistent scoring drives to take control early in a 39-3 rout in Tucson. Iowa State dropped to 3-4 overall and 1-3 in Big 12 play with the loss.

Here are three takeaways from Iowa State's dismal defeat.

Iowa State's offense could not find its rhythm

The biggest concern for the Cyclones was their inability move the football. The Cyclones finished with 221 total yards, including just 36 rushing yards. Without a productive ground game, Iowa State struggled to establish balance and keep Arizona's defense guessing.

The Cyclones also had difficulty extending their possessions on third down, converting only three of 14 attempts. Those missed opportunities made it difficult to build momentum and put additional pressure on the defense.

Moving forward, Iowa State must find ways to finish drives, create opportunities for its playmakers, and become more efficient in serious situations.

Arizona's explosive passing attack set the tone

Arizona wasted little time establishing control. Quarterback Noah Fifita connected with Isiah Mizell for a 71-yard touchdown early in the first quarter, immediately putting the Cyclones on their heels.

Arizona has also received contributions from its running game, with Quincy Craig and Kedrick Reescano adding rushing touchdowns. The Wildcats scored on their first four possessions and entered halftime with a 25-3 advantage. Considering Iowa State isn't built to come back from such a deficit, this essentially ended the game.

The Cyclones must regroup moving forward

Although the results were difficult, Iowa State has the opportunity to use this performance as a learning experience. The team needs greater consistency offensively, improved third-down execution, and better answers against opponents capable of creating explosive plays.

Jimmy Rogers and this coaching staff must evaluate how the Cyclones can generate more rushing production and give the offense more opportunities to remain on the field. Defensively, limiting big plays and getting opponents off the field earlier will be important priorities.

With the Big 12 schedule continuing, Iowa State cannot afford to let one difficult performance define the rest of its season. The main focus will be correcting mistakes, improving execution, and preparing for the next challenge.

Final takeaway

Arizona delivered a dominant performance, while the Cyclones struggled to establish an offensive identity. The 39-3 defeat has shown the importance of a balanced offense, third-down efficiency, and defensive consistency. Iowa State must respond in their next game if they hope to regain momentum in conference play.
