After a thrilling 45-42 victory over West Virginia, Iowa State has plenty to build on. The Cyclones' offense showed its potential behind Aiden Flora's five-touchdown performance, Jaylen Raynor's 264 passing yards, and Cody Jackson's 160 receiving yards.
Do's
Keep giving Aiden Flora the ball: Iowa State should continue giving Flora opportunities after his breakout performance against West Virginia. The running back finished with 212 rushing yards and five total touchdowns, showing how much pressure he can put on a defense when he get into open field. His production also helps open up the passing game for Jaylen Raynor and gives the Cyclones another way to set the tempo.
Keep attacking downfield: The Cyclones should keep using their passing game to create explosive plays. Raynor finished with 264 passing yards, while Cody Jackson recorded six receptions for 160 yards and a touchdown. That connection gives Iowa State a dynamic duo. If the defense can focus heavily on stopping the run, Iowa State has shown it can make them pay through the air.
Stay aggressive late in the game: Iowa State should not be conservative when the game gets tight. The Cyclones just showed they can win in a shootout, and their biggest offensive weapons delivered when they needed to. Keep attacking instead of simply trying to protect a lead, which could help Iowa State close out more games.
Dont's
Don't get predictable: Iowa State can't let the opposing defense know what is coming. With Flora's ability to run the ball and Raynor and Jackson's production through the air, the Cyclones have enough weapons to keep the defenses on their heels.
Don't waste explosive plays: When players like Flora and Jackson are creating big gains, Iowa State needs to turns those opportunities into touchdowns - it can't settle for field goals. Having big plays can quickly change the momentum of the games, so the Cyclones have to capitalize on when they get them.
Don't take your foot off the gas: A 45-point performance shows what this offense can accomplish when everything is clicking. Iowa State should continue playing with the same urgency throughout the game rather than giving an opponent an opportunity to fight its way back into the contest
Can't afford to be comfortable: The Cyclones showed everyone they can score and have the talent to put points on the board, but a 45-42 game also shows how quickly a lead can change in the blink of an eye. Moving forward, Iowa State needs to stay tight and not make any mental mistakes that can hurt the team in future games because I am sure the game wouldn't be as close if the Cyclones can put their foot on their opponent's neck and put the pressure on the opponents.
