Brock Purdy shined in a dominant 49ers victory, while injuries and rushing struggles plague other former Iowa State stars during a volatile second week of professional action.
With Week 2 of the NFL season having come and gone, it was a very up-and-down week for former Iowa State football players.
Here is how some of the former Cyclones performed in Week 2:
Breece Hall and Will McDonald IV
In a Week 2 matchup against the Green Bay Packers. Will McDonald IV and the New York Jet had a good game on defense, holding the Packers to 199 total yards (136 passing yards and 63 rushing yards) and forcing one turnover: a fumble by Packers running back MarShawn Lloyd.
The Packers defense also showed up, especially in the run game, holding former Iowa State and current New York Jets running back Breece Hall to 16 carries for 29 rushing yards (1.8 YPC) and zero touchdowns. Though Hall produced in the passing game with five targets for 63 receiving yards, it was not enough. The Packers crawled back from a 17-7 deficit in the fourth quarter to win 20–17 in overtime on a 26-yard field goal by Trey Smack.
The Jets dropped to 1-1 with the loss.
David Montgomery
The struggle for the former Iowa State backs continued with David Montgomery and the Houston Texans. In a game where offense was hard to come by for Houston, Montgomery was no exception. He managed only 6 carries for 10 rushing yards (1.7 YPC) and two targets for 14 yards with zero touchdowns. This offensive performance led to a 20–6 loss for the Houston Texans.
The Texans dropped to 0-2 with the loss.
Charlie Kolar
After receiving a 3-year, $24.3 million contract with the Los Angeles Chargers in March 2026 as a free agent, Kolar came into the season as the Chargers' starting tight end. But in the Week 2 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders (26–14), Kolar recorded 21 receiving yards on three receptions before exiting with an injury. Kolar suffered a broken forearm, leading to his being placed on injured reserve, and is now expected to miss a minimum of four weeks, with a target return sometime this season
The Chargers dropped to 0-2 with the loss.
Brock Purdy
Brock Purdy and the San Francisco 49ers' hot start to the season continued after a big 27-7 win against the Los Angeles Rams in Melbourne, Australia. Purdy and the 49ers returned home to Levi's Stadium to face off against the Miami Dolphins. In this game, Purdy completed 20 / 22 of his passes (90.9%) for 287 passing yards, two touchdowns, and a rushing touchdown, leading to a dominant to a 35–13 win over Miami.
The 49ers are 2-0 on the young season.
