Coming off a hard-fought and emotional 16-13 loss in the Cy-Hawk rivalry game, Iowa State returns home to Jack Trice Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 19, seeking clarity and execution before diving into Big 12 play.
The Cyclones host the Bowling Green Falcons in a non-conference matchup designed to serve as a pivotal tune-up. For Iowa State, the primary objective centers on establishing a consistent offensive rhythm and solidifying rotation roles across key positions, providing the coaching staff a final look at line combinations and depth packages before taking on Big 12 competition against No.17 Utah.
Saturday’s kickoff in Ames marks the conclusion of the Cyclones' non-conference slate, giving Iowa State one final opportunity to iron out execution details on offense before entering the grueling conference schedule.
Here are three Cyclones to keep an eye on against the Falcons
Jaylen Raynor (#1, QB)
Coming off a game where he threw for 117 yards and 1 touchdown, the Arkansas State transfer is going to be looking to get into a rhythm. With an average of 6.2 yards per attempt against Iowa, look for that to change against the Falcons, as Raynor has proven throughout his collegiate career that he is capable of pushing the ball downfield. The deep ball might prove to be critical to the Cyclones' offensive performance and could lead to a huge year for Raynor since it allows the dual-threat quarterback to use his legs to exploit defenses on the ground and in the air.
Aiden Flora (#21, HB)
The redshirt sophomore running back and kick returner for the Cyclones has proven capable of handling the workload of a starting running back. With a 19-carry, 89-yard performance vs. Iowa last week, look for Flora to keep putting up numbers against the Falcons. Despite the fact that I don't anticipate the versatile back getting as many carries on the ground, I would anticipate a few throws in his direction, followed by explosive plays.
Cody Jackson (#2, WR)
The former consensus 4-star prospect and top-10 national wide receiver recruit has yet to record a catch this season for the Cyclones. He will be looking to change that heading into the game against the Falcons. After posting 53 catches for 799 yards and 6 touchdowns in 2025 at Tarleton State, Jackson has shown his potential as a serious threat for the Cyclones. With quarterback Jaylen Raynor likely to attempt more deep passes this week against the Falcons, Jackson is expected to be a primary target for a lot of these plays.
