The Cyclones look to stifle the Mountaineers’ powerful run game in a high-stakes Big 12 clash. Discover why home-field advantage and red-zone efficiency favor an Iowa State rebound.

Iowa State (2–2) returns home to Jack Trice Stadium to take on the West Virginia Mountaineers (3–1) on Saturday (11:00 AM CT, TNT). Both teams are coming off tough losses, with the Cyclone coming off a 31-17 loss at home to 13th-ranked Utah (4-0) and the Mountaineers coming off a 24–41 loss to Oklahoma State (3-1). With both teams desperate for a conference win, can the Cyclones prove the oddsmakers right and pull off the win at home?

Here is our our final betting prediction for the Cyclones' second Big 12 matchup of the season:

Spread: Iowa State -3

With West Virginia being a heavy power-run team, this could play in Iowa State's favor. The Cyclones have been great at stopping the run for most of the season; they have been able to hold teams to just 113.8 rushing yards per game. That will put Michael Hawkins Jr. and this Mountaineer offense into a lot of passing situations, where this Cyclone defense isn't a slouch either.

Also, don't forget about the home-field advantage. This Iowa State fanbase is going to look for redemption after last week's loss to Utah, and with this being a conference game as well, this crowd should be loud all game. Look for the crowd at home to play a factor in this game.

Total: Over 53.5

With West Virginia’s high-tempo spread option offense and questionable defense, this could be a high-scoring matchup. The Cyclones will have the chance to put up points early and often against this West Virginia defense. The Mountaineers have allowed 24.8 points and 426.5 total yards per game this year. If given that yardage, I expect the Cyclones to have many trips to the red zone, where they have been perfect (12/12) in scoring. The tempo of the Mountaineer offense could tire Iowa State's defense by the fourth quarter, leading to late points.

Other Picks

Aiden Flora 2+ TDs: West Virginia has allowed plenty of yards to opposing offenses this season. If that trend continues on Saturday, the Cyclones should get plenty of chances in the red zone, where they have been perfect so far. That could mean more red zone carries for Aiden Flora, who already has three rushing touchdowns from that area this season.
