Raynor has shown flashes of potential through the first six games of the 2026 season, but the inconsistency of the passing game and recent offensive struggles have created questions about his ability to lead the Cyclones through the second half of the year.

Iowa State quarterback Jaylen Raynor has had both highs and lows during the first half of the season. The senior has helped the Cyclones win three games, but the offense has struggled to find the consistency it needs, especially against tough teams like BYU. With conference play continuing after the bye week. Raynor will need to improve his product and decision-making to help Iowa State get back on track.

Strong start to show his potential

Throughout his first six games, Raynor has completed 85 of 148 passes for 1,001 yards, seven touchdowns, and four interceptions. He has also contributed 166 rushing yards and three touchdowns on the ground, giving Iowa State another option when plays break down.

One of Jaylen's best performances came against West Virginia on Oct. 3. He completed 19 of 27 passes for 264 yards and one touchdown, helping his team secure a 45-42 win. His talent to complete passes efficiently and move the offense downfield is when Raynor in his element.

Raynor's experience also gives the Cyclones a quarterback who will understand how to manage different game situations. However, maintaining that level of performance from week to week remains an important challenge

Inconsistency remains a concern

Jaylen Raynor main concern during this season against good teams. A good example was against No. 15 Utah, when he threw for 205 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions in a 31-17 loss.

The struggles have continued against BYU on Oct. 9th. Raynor completed 16 of 29 passes for just 98 yards and one touchdown as Iowa State fell to 24-10. The Cyclones finished with only 200 yards, making it difficult for the offense to finish drives and score points when needed.

The Cougar defense deserves a lot of credit, though. Raynor must find a way to get the ball to his playmakers. Iowa State also needs better overall offensive execution so the quarterback is not forced to carry the entire offense.

What must improve after the bye week

Moving forward, Raynor needs to improve his passing efficiency to build consistency and take advantage of opportunities while establishing a better running game and giving Raynor more time in the pocket will also help him operate more comfortably in the pocket.

Iowa State has time to regroup before facing Arizona on Oct. 24th. The upcoming game offers an opportunity to respond to the BYU loss and help the Cyclones regain momentum.

Raynor's seven passing touchdowns and rushing performance against West Virginia showed what he is about. Hopefully he can bounce back and lead this team to success in the back end of the schedule.
