As Jimmy Rogers builds a gritty culture, stagnant passing attacks and defensive regression against the run leave the Cyclones searching for answers during the bye week.

With the Cyclones heading into their bye week, let's review how the first half of the season has gone. Today, we'll focus on the coaches.

So here are the midseason grades for the Cyclone coaching staff.

Head Coach: Jimmy Rogers

The first year of the Jimmy Rogers era has been mixed, to say the least. This season, the team is 3-3 and has really struggled in conference games, going 1-2. But you can see the vision Rogers has; he's been good at building a culture, as it seems like the team plays hard for him every week, even when the team is getting beat pretty handily, like against Utah or out-toughed like against BYU; this team always seems to fight back, and that has been great to see. He's also been great when it comes to building out a roster. Allowing Aiden Flora to take over starting running back reps, and do what he does - be a playmaker - has also worked well. So, although not perfect, the future of the Rogers era seems bright.

Midseason Grade: B-

Offensive Coordinator: Tyler Roehl

This season, Tyler Roehl and this offense have struggled, with the main reason being their poor passing game. Although they have a good running game that averages 178.2 yards per game, led by the standout Aiden Flora, the Cyclone offense is still limited because of the struggles in the passing game. So far this season, they haven't been able to sustain consistency in their passing attack. Iowa State has only completed 13 passes of 20 yards or more, placing it outside the top 100 in the nation, and the Cyclones' big play rate amounts to just 2.16 per game. This lack of a passing game has seriously held back the offense's ability to reach its full potential.

Midseason Grade: C-

Defensive Coordinator: Jesse Bobbit

Jesse Bobbit and the Cyclone defense started the season great, giving up just 11 points per game on average and a total of 679 yards to opposing offenses. In their first three games, they allowed an average of 226.3 yards per game, with great performances that include holding Southeast Missouri State to 10 points, Iowa to 16, and Bowling Green to only 7. But lately, the defense has struggled, especially against the run and mobile quarterbacks. In the last two weeks, quarterbacks alone have run for over 250 yards against them, and tackling has also gotten worse and needs to improve. Overall, the defense has been decent but still has plenty of room to get better.

Midseason Grade: C+
