Iowa State heads into a battle against BYU, looking to keep the game competitive as the Cougars enter as favorites. Can the Cyclones cover the spread, or will BYU take care of business at home?

The Line

Spread: BYU- 10.5

Total: 46..5

Iowa State faces a tough opponent on Friday in No. 8 BYU, but the Cyclones have shown they can keep pace in a high-scoring game. 10.5 points favor the Cougars, but the biggest concern is whether or not Iowa State can stay competitive long enough to cover the spread. After an offensive performance that produced 45 points against West Virginia, Iowa State will look to carry that momentum into its next challenge. BYU does have home-field advantage, but the Cyclones could make this game closer than people expect.

For Iowa State to cover the spread, the Cyclones must establish the running game, and protect the football, and avoid giving BYU extra possessions. Offensive consistently will be especially important against BYU as they are capable of taking advantage of mistakes. Iowa State cannot afford to start slow and become one-dimensional on offense.

BYU is a talented team, but winning by at least 11 points will be a challenge. If Iowa State stays competitive through the first half and makes plays in the fourth quarter, the Cyclones can keep the game close and make it a two-possession game. I am taking Iowa State +10.5 because the points give the underdogs room to stay competitive, even if BYU wins.

Over 46.5 is another interesting angle heading into the game. The Cyclones have shown they can produce points, and Iowa State will need another productive offensive performance to challenge BYU. If both teams can move the football and convert scoring opportunities, this game could turn into a shootout.

The main factor for the over will be offensive efficiency. Iowa State must sustain meaningful drives and finish every possession with touchdowns rather than settling for field goals. BYU, meanwhile, will look to use its home-field advantages to generate momentum and put pressure on the Cyclones.

There is some risk if either defense controls the game or forces turnovers that disrupt offensive momentum. Nevertheless, if the offenses execute and the scoring stays consistent throughout four quarters, the total could climb above 46.5 points.

BYU has home field advantage right now and have the probability to win, but I expect Iowa to make the Cougars work for it The Cyclones should have the opportunity to score enough points to stay within the spread.

Ultimately, Iowa must stay on task offensively to challenge BYU and cover the spread.

Best Bet: Iowa State + 10.5

Total Pick: Over 46.5

Projected final score: BYU 31, Iowa State 24
