Here are my thoughts on some of the point spreads for games not listed in our viewing guide.
Happy prediction Friday, Hawkeye fans!
We began the day with my prediction for Saturday's battle for Floyd of Rosedale between No. 15 Iowa and Minnesota, but there's still more content to come before I hop in the car and drive to Minneapolis to cover this game.
For those of you interested in what the oddsmakers have to say about Week 8, here are my thoughts on some of the most intriguing lines along with an early thought on the point spread and total for the Iowa-Minnesota game.
NOTE: All betting lines are courtesy of DraftKings and are as of Oct. 22. Call 1-800-BETS OFF if you live in Iowa (1-800-MY-RESET is the national line) and are struggling with gambling.
No. 15 Iowa @ Minnesota
Line: Iowa -6.5
Total: 40.5
You can find my actual prediction on this line when my betting prediction for this game releases later on Friday, but in the meantime, here are some thoughts on DK's line for Saturday's Floyd of Rosedale clash in Minneapolis.
I think Draft Kings nailed this line on the head here. There isn't a lot of optimism from Minnesota fans after their team was dismantled to pieces by an average Purdue team two weeks ago, and Iowa is clearly playing with a lot of confidence with Jeremy Hecklinski at quarterback. I'll save the rest of my analysis for the betting prediction, but you get the idea here.
The rest of the slate
No. 6 Indiana @ Michigan
Line: Indiana -7.5 | O/U: 41.5
This game was already at the top of our viewing guide, but it should also be treated as an important contest on the betting side of things, too. Though Indiana is 6-1, the Hoosiers haven't been playing good football, especially on offense. It might be bullish to pick Michigan to win outright, but the Wolverines seem to playing with a different gear under new quarterback Tommy Carr. This game could come down to the final drive.
No. 18 LSU @ Auburn
Line: LSU -7.5 | O/U: 51.5
Auburn is suddenly a national media darling after knocking off No. 1 Georgia in Athens last weekend, but this is far from an easy game to turn the page to. I don't think LSU is that good, but it is fighting for its College Football Playoff lives right now. This could be a letdown spot for Auburn at home, so it might be wise to lay the points with LSU.
No. 11 Tennessee @ South Carolina
Line: South Carolina -2.5 | O/U: 50.5
This is a really interesting football game. Tennessee is riding high after beating Alabama last week, but South Carolina is also playing well despite its .500 record. The Gamecocks are a slight home favorite here, but if you decide to bet on them, your mind will probably come down to this thought: will we get a Shane Beamer masterclass or a disaster class?
San Diego State @ Colorado State
Line: SDSU -1.5 | O/U: 63.5
Forget the spread here, just pay attention to the total. Colorado State's defensive coordinator has been sleeping in his office for the past four weeks, but it sounds like there's no improvement on that side of the ball. On the other side, San Diego State head coach Sean Lewis is a pretty good offensive mind (he was the head coach at Kent State when they played Iowa in 2021). There's going to be some points in this one.
