The Hawkeye bats got going early and often to complete a 10-1 midweek campaign.

Iowa baseball closed out its midweek schedule on a high note with a dominant 14-4 victory over the visiting St. Thomas Tommies in eight innings at Duane Banks Field on Tuesday evening.

Brady Ferguson earned the victory on the mound for the Hawkeyes after throwing 2.1 innings and allowing two runs, while Warren Bowe was saddled with the defeat for the Tommies.

What Happened?

St. Thomas scored a run in the first, but this night belonged to Iowa. The Hawkeyes jumped all over the Tommies' pitching staff in the first, leading to eight runs. Miles Risley got things going with a sacrifice fly to center to tie the game, but the bulk of Iowa's runs came off the bat of Matthew Delgado and Kooper Schulte.

Delgado brought home two more runs with a single, and Schulte (he finished with three RBIs) ripped a double four batters later to knock St. Thomas starter Warren Bowe out of the contest.

Delgado collected his third RBI of the night (he finished with four) with a groundout in the third to make it 9-1. The Tommies might as well have booked a late-night dinner reservation at this point, because the Hawkeyes had complete control of the contest.

The large lead helped Iowa's pitching staff stay under control - a start contrast to last Tuesday's midweek game against Illinois State that saw the Hawkeyes burn through 14 pitchers and lose 13-6.

Iowa continued to stack runs after that and ran away with the ballgame. The Hawkeyes went 10-1 in midweek games this season, with the lone loss being the aforementioned Illinois State defeat on April 28.

Up Next

Iowa, now 29-18 on the season, returns to action this weekend for its final roadtrip of the regular season against rival Nebraska. The Cornhuskers are 34-14 overall and 17-7 in Big Ten Play.

The series will take place from May 8-10 at Haymarket Park in Lincoln, Nebraska. Friday's series opener is set for a 6:00 first pitch.
