Heller expressed frustration with not only his pitching staff, but his batters not taking advantage of opportunities early in the game.
Overall thoughts with today's game?
RICK HELLER: Just bad baseball. They gave us a ton of free bases, and we we didn't get the hit to break the game open. We scored a run, scored a run, scored a run, but, I mean, we might have, I'm pretty sure it was around 12 left on base in the first five innings. So they tried to give us the game, and we don't take it when we were getting decent pitching and then they just kicked the crap out of us, you know, seven hits in the one inning, and the inning that they had, the big inning, were all hits. I don't think we had a free base in that inning. Just couldn't get them out and but the story for us was not taking it when they were trying to give it to us. And that's what happens, I guess.
How do you address those problems with the team?
[When you are] getting those opportunities and not coming through offensively, you get what you deserve. You know, this is the result you're going to get when that happens. And the pitching, you know, there were some guys sprinkled in that did a good job. But, you know, other than that, there was some catastrophic performances that just just weren't good, you know. And you know, 14 pitchers, how many pitching changes might be a record for us.
Is 14 the most pitchers you've ever used in your career?
I was just telling Sam [sports information director, Basler] I don't know for sure, but it seems like it. It definitely seems like it, but no, it's just disappointing because we were getting on base, getting lead off guys on, and had big innings just sitting there early, and then we let them hang around, and we actually gave them the first four runs were all free bases. They were all walks. So we weren't taking it when they were giving it to us, and we were giving them everything they were getting. And then, like I said, then they, they just pounded us after that last, last three innings.
What do you think the plan is for the starters this weekend?
Not for sure, not 100% because we haven't really got too deep into the scout yet. But I mean, I imagine it's going to be, you know, very similar to what you saw this past weekend.
