Linebacker Cam Buffington tallied a career-high 15 tackles to help lead Iowa to its first Cy-Hawk triumph since 2023.
It certainly wasn't a pretty game, but for the first time in three years, the Cy-Hawk Trophy will reside in Iowa City, Iowa.
Though Iowa was favored by two touchdowns against a new-look Iowa State squad, it took a 42-yard field goal from Caden Buhr in the final seconds to steal a 16-13 victory over the Cyclones at Kinnick Stadium on Saturday night.
Here are some of the top numbers that stood out from Iowa's win:
0: Neither team committed a turnover in this one, but the goose egg was definitely something that stood out from a Hawkeye standpoint. The last time Iowa didn't commit a turnover against Iowa State was in 2021, when it infamously forced four against Cyclone quarterback Brock Purdy.
5: Penalties kept the Hawkeyes behind the sticks all night long, and it showed in the box score. Iowa went just 5-for-15 (33%) on third down conversions, but it didn't matter because Iowa State was equally as bad (4/13, 31%).
9: A close game is usually what we get in this matchup every season, and that was exactly the case on Saturday. This series has now been decided by 10 points or less for the ninth straight season and the 16-13 final score was identical to Iowa State's win last year.
15: Iowa's defense was stout in this one, but few players collected a better personal night than linebacker Cam Buffington. The third-year was on a roll in his second career start, tallying a career-best 15 tackles, with 10 coming in the first half.
42: That's how long Buhr's (pronounced "boo-er") game-winning field goal was. The walk-on second-year kicker was 3-for-3 on field goal attempts in this one, with the 45-yard field goal at the end of the first half tying a career long.
56: Emerging wide receiver Tony Diaz finished with 95 yards on eight receptions (12 targets), but the biggest play he made on this night was undoubtedly his 56-yard reception late in the second quarter. The Hawkeyes scored their only touchdown of the night three plays later, and the play helped re-ignite the Kinnick Stadium crowd.
191: Hank Brown remained the starting quarterback yet again, and his performance was certainly worthy of it. Brown finished with 191 passing yards (70% completion percentage) - a 123.5 quarterback rating.
255: A 16-13 final score usually features numbers that favor the defense, and that was no exception for Iowa on this night. The Hawkeyes held the Cyclones to just 255 total yards and only nine first downs.
264: The inexperience on special teams was a major question mark entering the season for the Hawkeyes, but it hasn't been much of a problem over the course of the first two weeks of the year. Buhr's aforementioned bounce-back after his rough start has been the main talking point, but lost in the fold of Saturday's win was what punter Boston Everitt did. The Aussie tallied 264 yards on six punts, with several of them landing inside the 10-yard line.
