Iowa Football: Running Backs Coach Omar Young Leaving Iowa for NFL Position cover image

Young spent one season with the Hawkeyes. With spring practice just five weeks away, Kirk Ferentz will have to find a replacement quickly.

It's been a busy offseason for Kirk Ferentz and Iowa football, and it continues to stay that way.

Running backs coach Omar Young will depart the program after one season to take a the same position with the NFL's Las Vegas Raiders, per a report from CBS Sports' Matt Zenitz and David Eickholt.

The late move is due to Las Vegas' hire of new head coach Klint Kubiak, who didn't take over until he finished coaching the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl LX.

Young returning to the professional level isn't a surprise, as he's coached in the NFL for four teams: the New England Patriots, Chicago Bears, Green Bay Packers, and Cleveland Browns. Young's efforts helped the Bears lead the NFL in rushing yards in 2022, and the 3,014 yards remain a Chicago franchise record.

Young's departure in late February will force Ferentz and Co. to find a replacement quickly, as spring practice is just five weeks away. The Hawkeyes have a talented running back room that includes veteran back Kamari Moulton and FCS All-American L.J. Phillips, who transferred in from South Dakota in the offseason.
