Ben McCollum's first transfer addition collected 10 points and 2.7 rebounds per game for a Redbirds team that reached the NIT finals.

Iowa men's basketball has landed its first commitment of the 2026 transfer portal cycle, and it fittingly comes from the mid-major level.

Illinois State guard Ty'Reek Coleman will join Ben McCollum's Hawkeyes, he announced on social media Friday.

The 6-foot-2 Coleman had a successful freshman campaign for a Redbirds team that entered 2026 with major expectations, recording 10 points, 2.7 rebounds, and 1.8 assists off the bench last season.

Coleman's best game of the year fittingly may have been his final game in an Illinois State uniform - an 88-66 loss to Auburn in the NIT championship game. The Aurora, Illinois native collected 17 points on 7-of-12 shooting, including 3-of-5 from three-point range.

Ranked as a three-star transfer portal recruit by 247Sports, Coleman figures to help fill the scoring void vacated by Bennett Stirtz and give the Hawkeyes more depth at the guard position. He will have three seasons of eligibility remaining.

Here's what JPR Scouting had to say about Coleman on X:

"Ty'Reek Coleman is a stud. Was not outmatched by SEC guards yesterday. Big time quickness and lots of paint touches. 60% at the rim on the year, 41% from three. Had 17 points on 7/12 shooting. Added two assists and three steals. Reminds me so much of LJ Cason."
