The Hawkeyes now have three Power Four opponents on their 2026-27 non-conference schedule, with all three games taking place at neutral sites across Iowa.
Iowa men's basketball continues to schedule aggressively in the non-conference.
Ben McCollum is taking his Hawkeyes to Northwest Iowa in 2026-27, where they'll face off against ACC foe Virginia Tech at the Tyson Events Center in Sioux City on Nov. 10, per an announcement on social media Tuesday.
This marks the fifth Power Four opponent on Iowa's 2027 non-conference slate, joining the already-announced Creighton and Alabama matchups for Nov. 15 and Dec. 21 in Des Moines, respectively. Iowa will also host in-state rival Iowa State in early December and make the return trip to Xavier as part of the home-and-home with the Musketeers.
It will also be the second Hawkeye basketball game to take place in Sioux City this season, joining Iowa women's basketball's contest against Vanderbilt on Nov. 15.
Another potential reason for the Sioux City location? It's located 1 hour and 21 minutes from McCollum's hometown of Storm Lake.
“We’re excited to bring Hawkeye basketball to the western side of the state for an early-season matchup against Virginia Tech,” McCollum said in a release from Iowa athletics. “This gives us three in-state neutral site games against Power Conference opponents this season and 21 games inside our state border.”
While Virginia Tech doesn't carry the same prestige as the two matchups that will be hosted in the capital city, the Hokies are still a respectable matchup for the Hawkeyes.
Virginia Tech has suffered just one losing season in head coach Mike Young's seven years in charge, but haven't appeared in the NCAA tournament since 2022. The 2026 Hokies went 19-13 overall and 8-10 in ACC play, but declined an invitation to the NIT.
Though Iowa has found more success on the national scene, Virginia Tech owns a 4-0 head-to-head mark against the Hawkeyes. The two teams last met in the 2017 Big Ten/ACC challenge, which saw the Hokies steamroll Iowa in Blacksburg, 79-55.
The start time and TV destination for the contest will be announced at a later date. Tickets will go on sale on Friday, June 26.
