The longtime home of Iowa's winter sports could be getting a much-needed overhaul.
The University of Iowa is seeking approval from the Iowa Board of Regents to move forward with plans to renovate Carver-Hawkeye Arena, per release.
The longtime home of Iowa men's basketball, women's basketball, and wrestling has seen few enhancements over its 43-year lifespan, but the Hawkeyes are well-aware major renovations need to happen in order to continue to boost the profile of Hawkeye athletics.
“This initiative began with a feasibility study in 2023, and due to the incredible success of our silent leadership fundraising campaign, we are prepared to take this exciting next step,” athletic director Beth Goetz said in the release. “Recent improvements like the student section risers and new court have shown what’s possible. These renovations will take that next step - making events more exciting, more comfortable, and ensuring we preserve the intimidating atmosphere that helps our teams compete at the highest level.”
The proposed renovation is estimated to cost between $50-70 million, but would be funded entirely through private donations and completed in phases over a two-year period to "minimize disruption" during the busy winter sports schedule.
The planned improvements are as follows:
Additional premium seating option and club space
Upgrades throughout the concourse, concessions, restrooms, and seating bowl, with a strong emphasis on improved accessibility and fan comfort and enhanced game-day atmosphere.
Carver-Hawkeye Arena currently has a capacity of 14,995, but this proposed renovation would likely lower the seating capacity. Iowa understands this, but says it's committed to offer a better experience for Hawkeye fans.
