Here's how the action unfolded.

It's starting to feel like spring in Iowa City, but the college baseball and softball seasons are heading down the home stretch.

For the Iowa baseball and softball teams, each game means a chance to keep their campaigns alive for another week and make the Big Ten tournament, so there's significant meaning in every ballgame.

Keep reading to see how each program performed over the weekend.

Baseball

Rick Heller's club started their weekend off with a bang, but finished on a disappointing note. Iowa's series opener against Maryland was originally scheduled to begin on Friday evening, but school officials moved the game up to try and beat out the severe thunderstorms that were heading for Eastern Iowa.

That didn't happen.

The Hawkeyes led 6-4 in the bottom of the sixth before a plethora of lightning delays forced Game 1 to be suspended. Once the contest resumed on Saturday, Iowa blew the game open, scoring eight more runs en route to a dominant 14-4 victory.

Game 2 was more of the same. The Hawkeyes jumped on the Terrapins early and rode a fantastic outing from senior pitcher Maddux Frese to a 5-2 win.

Whatever momentum Iowa had built over the previous two games came to a crashing halt in the series finale. The Terrapin bats awoke from their slumber, plating 16 runs against seven Hawkeye pitchers to avoid the sweep.

Though the series finale was disappointing, the series triumph was a big one for Iowa. Now 21-16 overall and 7-11 in Big Ten play, Hawkeyes now sit in 10th place in the Big Ten standings - two spots ahead of the cutline to make the Big Ten tournament.

Softball

Inclement weather also forced Iowa softball to play a Saturday doubleheader against Indiana, but the result was anything but positive. The Hawkeyes had a chance to win both contests, but lost them both in heartbreaking fashion.

The Hoosiers won a 2-1 defensive slugfest in Game 1 before rallying from a 7-2 deficit by plating five runs in the seventh inning and then scoring two more in the 10th to win Game 2.

Saturday's outcome hurt, but Iowa bounced back in a big way in the series finale to avoid the sweep. Braylen Conlon pitched five solid innings, and watched her bullpen hold onto the late lead and win 4-2.

“We played a hard-fought game. It is mentally, emotionally and physically taxing to come back on a Sunday, and I think it speaks to the resilience of this team," head coach Stacy May-Johnson told HawkeyeSports.

Now 23-22 overall and 6-12 in Big Ten play, Iowa is tied with Minnesota in the league standings, but loses the tiebreaker due to the Gophers' series win earlier this year. The Hawkeyes are just below the cutline to make the Big Ten tournament as a result.
