Welcome back to our countdown to the 2026 Iowa football season!
Since May 28, we've been counting down the final 100 days until the Hawkeyes swarm out of the Kinnick Stadium tunnel for their season opener against Northern Illinois on Sept. 5.
Each day of the countdown has traditionally featured an article profiling one of the current members of the 2026 Hawkeyes based on their jersey number, but as you may have noticed recently, the jersey numbers haven't been consistent, forcing us to mix things up.
Today is going to be one of those "mix-up" days. Iowa again doesn't issue a jersey number for a countdown day, so instead of looking at a current player for Day 39, we're going to go back in time and find a player who did.
That player is former tight end Brad Herman, who played for the Hawkeyes from 2008-2011.

Career
Though he was one of seven true freshman to see the field in 2008, most of Herman's action through his first two seasons came in blocking and special teams situations.
Herman collected just one reception (it went for three yards) by this point, but with Tony Moeaki graduating after the 2009 season, Herman finally had an opportunity to share reps with experienced tight end Allen Reisner in 2010.
Reisner would be the primary tight end that season, but Herman made his mark during one crucial game - Michigan State on Oct. 30. The Hawkeyes were coming off a gut-wrenching 31-30 loss to rival Wisconsin the week prior, but they took their anger out on the No. 5 and unbeaten Spartans.
Herman only registered three catches in Iowa's 37-6 win, but one of them went for a career-best 56 yards. Quarterback Ricky Stanzi woefully underthrew the ball on 3rd and 1, but Herman managed to fight his way back to the ball and take it inside the five-yard line to set up another Hawkeye touchdown.
As it turned out, this would be Herman's best pass-catching performance as a Hawkeye. He would finish with a career-high 154 receiving yards in 2010 before finally earning some starting action (three starts) in 2011.
Iowa's season was a roller coaster that year, with Herman totaling 95 yards on just eight receptions. He would miss his final collegiate game - the 2011 Insight Bowl - due to injury.
