Welcome back to our countdown to the 2026 Iowa football season!

Since May 28, we've been counting down the final 100 days until the Hawkeyes swarm out of the Kinnick Stadium tunnel for their season opener against Northern Illinois on Sept. 5.

Each day of the countdown has primarily featured an article profiling one of the current members of the 2026 Hawkeyes based on their jersey number. Hopefully you've gotten this down by now, but if you're knew, athletes will appear on here when their jersey number matches the day of the countdown. If it's 49 days until kickoff, we're going to take a look at the player who wears No. 49.

As a matter of fact, today marks 49 days until kickoff, so that means it's time to take a look at one of the most beloved positions in recent Iowa football history - punter. No, it's not Tory Taylor, but it is another Aussie punter - Boston Everitt.

Learn more about him here.

Bio

Hometown: Hope Island, Australia

High School: Baccalaureate Academic Colours, Football Colours, Academic Insignia for Sport Exercise and Health Science.

Year: Freshman

Height: 6-foot-1

Weight: 200 pounds

Other notable players to wear No. 49: Hawkeye fans are going to recognize this name because he was still playing for the Black and Gold last season. The player we're talking about here is of course former defensive lineman Ethan Hurkett. Hurkett was a standout on an experienced defensive line, recording 36 tackles, 10.5 tackles for loss, and eight sacks in 2025.

Everitt's career so far

Everitt is entering his first season as a Hawkeye. Though we haven't seen what he can do in a game yet, there's one thing that could yield a positive result for him - he's yet another Australian punter to don the Black and Gold.

It's unfair to compare Everitt to Taylor, now the punter for the Chicago Bears, but Taylor did set a hight standard for successful punters in Iowa City. Taylor's successor, Rhys Dakin, did a solid job over two years before leaving for Michigan State, so the expectations will be high for Everitt.

Everitt is only in year one as a Hawkeye, so it's not always going to be perfect, especially considering he has to balance his football career with medical school. That sounds like a difficult task, but Everitt already managed to complete one season at the University of Melbourne doing so.

Everitt will compete with Simpson College transfer Tanner Philpott for the starting job, but Everitt likely has the edge in this race due to Iowa's great history of Aussie punters.

Only time will tell to see who new special teams coordinator Chris Polizzi opts to go with on opening day, but Hawkeye fans probably won't mind seeing another Aussie punter on their team.
