Burt enters his redshirt sophomore season in a loaded tight end room.

Welcome back to our countdown to the 2026 Iowa football season!

Since May 28, we've been counting down the final 100 days until the Hawkeyes storm out of the Kinnick Stadium tunnel to "Back In Black" for their season-opener against Northern Illinois.

Each day has primarily featured an article profiling a player that happens to wear the jersey number for the respective day in the countdown, and that's exactly what we have today.

Featured stories

Today marks 80 days until kickoff, so it's time to take a look at No. 80 - tight end Michael Burt.

Get to know him here:

Bio

Hometown: Omaha, Nebraska

High School: Creighton Preparatory School

Year: Redshirt Sophomore

Height: 6-foot-5

Weight: 249 pounds

Other notable players to wear No. 80: A recognizable name to wear No. 80 for Iowa in recent years is tight end Henry Krieger-Coble. Krieger-Coble is best remembered for being the primary starting tight end during Iowa's magical 2015 season, where he compiled 405 receiving yards and one touchdown. He's also the cousin of legendary Hawkeye and current San Francisco 49ers tight end George Kittle.

Burt's career so far

After redshirting his true freshman campaign of 2024, Burt earned playing time in seven games in 2025, but didn't register a single statistic in any of them.

Hailing from Omaha, Nebraska, Burt attended Creighton Preparatory School, a private all-boys high school that features an enrollment of roughly 1,000 students. Burt played three positions for his high school team during his career - tight end, defensive end, and long snapper - and earned all-state honors from both the Lincoln Journal-Star and the Omaha World-Herald for his performance.

Burt was ranked by 247Sports as a three-star prospect and the No. 7 player in the state of Nebraska for the Class of 2024. After receiving mostly FCS offers for a few months, the Big Ten offers began with Iowa and concluded with Nebraska, Minnesota, and Illinois all vying for Burt's services.

Burt ultimately chose the Hawkeyes on June 22, 2023. He will likely remain deep on Iowa's tight end depth chart this season due to the unit featuring the likes of DJ Vonnahme, Addison Ostrenga, and Zach Ortwerth.
