The Northern Illinois transfer looks to fill a role on a young defensive line in 2026.
Welcome back to our countdown to the 2026 Iowa football season!
May 28 marked 100 days until the Hawkeyes storm out of the Kinnick Stadium tunnel to "Back in Black," and to honor each day of the countdown, we'll feature an article on the player that wears the respective jersey number of the particular day.
Today represents 95 days until kickoff, which means it's time to take a look at No. 95 - defensive lineman Lance Ingold.
Bio
Hometown: Rochester, Illinois
High School: Rochester High School
Year: Redshirt sophomore
Height: 6-foot-5
Weight: 255 pounds
Other notable players to wear No. 95: Ingold hasn't played a snap for the Hawkeyes yet, but his jersey number could be a good indication of future success. No. 95 was worn by none other than former defensive lineman Aaron Graves during his career. Graves just wrapped up a standout career at Iowa that culminated in him earning second-team All-Big Ten honors and even becoming a new father.
Ingold's career so far
Though Ignold's first snap in a Hawkeye uniform is still in the future, he wouldn't be donning the Black and Gold if he didn't have success elsewhere. That previous success occurred at Northern Illinois.
After redshirting in 2024, Ingold played in six games for the Huskies in 2025, recording 17 tackles. Northern Illinois struggled to a 3-9 mark in its final season in the Mid-American Conference, but Ingold's best game of the year came in a 38-10 loss to Mississippi State where he recorded a career-best seven tackles.
Ingold entered the transfer portal on Dec. 27. 247Sports ranked him as a three-star transfer prospect and the No. 53 overall edge rusher available. Ingold then committed to Iowa on Jan. 8, giving the Hawkeyes some much-needed depth on the defensive line.
Ingold will likely be listed with the second team on Iowa's first depth chart, but that doesn't mean he won't see the field. The Hawkeyes will feature a very young defensive line in 2026 after the departures of Graves, Ethan Hurkett, and Max Llewellyn, so defensive line coach Kelvin Bell has plenty of options and may opt to take a by committee approach in the non-conference to see what he's got.
The 6-foot-5 Ingold is really athletic, too. He comes from a baseball family and played the sport himself in high school, so maybe offensive coordinator Tim Lester could get creative and use him in a trick play?
That's a far-fetched idea, but Iowa didn't bring Ingold in if it didn't think he could contribute this season. Ingold may not see a consistent role in 2026, but with three years of eligibility left, the Hawkeyes will have plenty of time to develop him.
