Kansas State football coach Collin Klein has had a few homers in his press conferences that have fueled Wildcats fans as they wait for the season to start.
So no one should be surprised that he dropped another one on the Big 12's biggest offseason stage. Klein emphasized the privilege and work ethic of playing for an institution like Kansas State.
"I tell recruits it’s going to be hard," Klein said in his Big 12 interview. "I tell them it’s a badge of honor to wear that Powercat. I tell them that the most valuable things in life you’re going to have to pay the most for. We’re going to make that price really freaking high to play at Kansas State."
As a multi-conference champion, Klein knows the lengths needed to win at the highest level. He wants to re-instill that into a program that recently redirected from its typical winning ways. What was supposed to be a generational season for the Wildcats turned out to be arguably the most disappointing in a decade.
Kansas State nearly had a disastrous year, as injuries piled up, stars underperformed, and the defense took a huge step back. At a certain point in the season, Kansas State was just chasing a few wins rather than a conference title or a possible postseason appearance.
But now, a new man is at the top, not only to replicate the program's typical success but to surpass it. Klein has established these goals and foundational morals since he returned to Manhattan, KS.
"We’re gonna be the new old school," Klein said in his introductory press conference. "We’re gonna stay true to a value system that’s been in place for a long time. We’re gonna move our program forward and take the steps necessary to chase excellence in everything we do. We’re gonna love our players. We’re gonna be elite relationship builders that strive and scratch and claw to make sure that we know that we, myself, and our staff have their backs no matter what. And make sure to help them become the best they can possibly be, on and off the field."
