DJ Giddens was projected as the backup running back with the Indianapolis Colts but has been dealing with a hamstring injury

This season was expected to be a breakout season for Indianapolis Colts second-year running back DJ Giddens.

After the learning experience as a rookie, many were counting on Giddens as the backup to future Hall of Famer Jonathan Taylor. What was once considered a slam dunk is now questionable after being sidelined with a hamstring injury. It has allowed rookie Seth McGowan to step in and pick up most of the reps as the No. 2 back.

McGowan is a seventh-round pick out of Kentucky. He also played for Oklahoma and New Mexico State.

Giddens was solely drafted in 2025 to serve as the backup to Taylor, who is one of the NFL's top rushers. Giddens finished with just 96 yards on 27 carries. The Colts were disappointed with his production, which is why they went out and drafted another running back.

But all signs were still pointing toward Giddens winning the job during training camp. And then the unfortunate injury happened, opening the door for McGowan. The positive for Giddens is he still has plenty of time left in the preseason to regain his spot.

The Colts are in desperate need solidifying the backup position to take some of the weight off Taylor's shoulders. Although Taylor led the league in rushing touchdowns and was third in yards, he led the NFL with 323 carries.

There will be lots of chances for Giddens or McGowan to get rushing attempts. The hope is Giddens is healthy by the start of the season so he can continue his growth. But, for now at least, he is going to have to play catch-up to McGowan, who is taking every advantage to this unexpected opportunity.

Don't expect Giddens to just roll over. He is one of the top running backs in K-State history for a reason. He is more than up to this newfound challenge in Indianapolis. We'll keep an eye out on his progress.
