On Tuesday, the Wildcats were upset 68-66 by the South Dakota State Jackrabbits at Bramlidge Colisueum. The Jackrabbits hit 10 3-pointers and shot 44 percent from the field. The Wildcats were led by Pape N'Diaye, who scored 18 points off the bench. This is the first year for coach Casey Alexander, who comes over from Belmont after replacing the fired Jerome Tang. The Wildcats only have one holdover from last year's team, Andrej Kostic. This is every sense of a rebuilding year for Kansas State, which has missed the NCAA Tournament for the past three seasons. In 2023, the Wildcats made a surprise run to the Elite Eight. The Wildcats administration and fan base are going to be very patient with Alexander and his team. This is no one-year fix. It's going to take some time. Rechsteiner is at his third school. He played two seasons at Virginia Tech before playing last year at Colorado State. Jaden Schutt is another transfer expected to get lots of playing time. He had previous stops with the Duke Blue Devils and Viriginia Tech. The Matadors are coming off a loss to the Wichita State Shockers in their opener. Like Kansas State, they are a team full of newbies. They have 11 new players on the roster, only returning two from last year. The Matadors are coming off just the second 20-win season in school history. They were projected to finish fourth in the Big West by the league media. The hope is the Wildcats can bounce back after a tough loss in the opener, which drew national media attention because it was such an upset. After this, the Wildcats have three more tune-up games before facing Gonzaga Nov. 24. That should give Alexander a real indicator of where this team can go this season. It won't easy playing in the Big 12, one of the best conferences in the country.
