VITALS: The Wildcats are starting quarterback Blake Barnett for the first time. He is their fourth starting quarterback in the last four games, joining Avery Johnson, Jacob Knuth and Dillon Duff.  Johnson sustained an injury at some point after last month's victory against the Kansas Jayhawks in the Sunflower Showdown. Prior, Johnson had made 32 consecutive starts but will miss his third straight game. He is likely done for the season according to coach Collin Klein. Kansas State has to be ultra careful with Barnett. He is one of only two healthy quarterbacks on the roster. The other is Duff, who had his share of difficulties in his one quarter against Colorado. He was pulled after being ineffective. Barnett was solid in relief, throwing for three touchdowns. The Wildcats also could be without one of their top running backs, Joe Jackson. He is listed as questionable on the depth chart. He is the third-leading rusher (384 yards) behind Rodney Fields and Johnson. The Wildcats are trying to halt a two-game losing streak that includes losses to the Arizona State Sun Devils and Colorado Buffaloes. Klein, who is in his first year, is trying to avoid another .500 season. Last year the Wildcats finished 6-6 under coach Chris Klieman, who resigned at the end of last season. A bright spot for K-State is the play of tight end Linkon Cure, who is the highest-rated recruit in school history. A sophomore, he caught his first touchdown pass against the Buffaloes last week and is showing signs of improvement. The Cowboys are led by quarterback Drew Mestamaker, who is considered among the top underclassmen prospects for the NFL draft. He has already thrown for 2,649 yards and 25 touchdowns in the Cowboys' high-scoring offense. Running back Caleb Hawkins also has 906 yards and four touchdowns. Two former OSU players, Fields and defensive end Wendell Gregory Jr., are now starters for the Wildcats. The Cowboys are coming off a 51-49 loss to the Iowa State Cyclones. The defeat basically knocked OSU from contention in the Big 12 title race. At 5-3, the season has been considered a disappointment for the Cowboys, who were ranked in the Top 25 during the preseason.
