Kansas State Wildcats quarterback Avery Johnson returns for his final season with hopes of College Football Playoff berth
It seems like Avery Johnson has been the Kansas State Wildcats' starting quarterback forever.
It should be because Johnson is entering his third full season as the starter. He now is down to his last chance to turn the Wildcats into consistent winners. Johnson is set to enter final year in the K-State spotlight, which has many waiting for him to have a breakout season.
Here's what College Football News wrote about Johnson: "Avery Johnson is way overdue to be amazing. The veteran quarterback has had moments when he looked and played like a dominant all-around force, and other times he's been just okay.He's got the size, mobility, athleticism, and now, he has the experience with close to 5,600 career yards and 48 touchdowns."
While Johnson has played solid as a starter, many are still waiting for him to reach another level. While he is one of the best dual-threat quarterbacks in college football, he has struggled with inconsistency.
No one expected that when he calmly took over late in the season for then-starter Will Howard. Johnson has made strides since, but it's time to see if he can take it to a new level.
He has a built-in advantage this season, with the hiring of new coach Collin Klein. He took over after Chris Klieman unexpected resigned. Klein is a former K-State star who also played quarterback.
He spent last season as the quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator at Texas A & M. His knowledge could be exactly what Johnson needs to hit a new gear that could have the Wildcats in the hunt for the Big 12 title and a shot in the College Football Playoff.
It also could help Johnson improve his NFL Draft stock and boost Klein's rep as a quarterback guru.
