It's been nearly two weeks since Michael Beasley's interview with Shannon Sharpe on Club Shay Shay.
And yet every day, there's seemingly a new soundbite that trends from the conversation. The former NBA journeyman unveiled personal stories, NBA tales, and anecdotes of hardship, making the two-hour interview seem almost like a therapy session. Among the many topics of conversation, Beasley called out ESPN personality Stephen A. Smith for his comments as the Kansas State legend transitioned to the NBA.
"Stephen A. Smith met me at 15 and didn’t say a word to me. Next thing I know, he's talking about 'character issues at 18,'" Beasley said in the interview. "How the f*** do you even know about character issues? You don’t know I was catching a bus to those gyms you saw me at. Walking a mile after I got on the bus, but I got character issues because why? You grew up with a f****** fridge, I didn’t. Y'all never asked me anything, not once. Y'all that just all thought I came from where I came from, and then judge what I did. So me and my friends got laughed at it."
Beasley was the second overall pick in the 2008 NBA Draft after a monster season at Kansas State. He averaged 26.1 points, 12.4 rebounds, and 1.7 blocks, pinning him as one of the country's best players and projecting him for a great career.
Unfortunately, mental health issues and off-court obstacles marred his professional career. This interview, while extended in length, sadly probably only captures a fraction of what the Wildcats legend had to endure. Instead of being a Miami Heat superstar, he became an NBA journeyman, boasting tenures with teams like the Minnesota Timberwolves, Phoenix Suns, and Houston Rockets.
Luckily, he's been able to rebound in his post-NBA career by continuing to play basketball at a competitive level. Beasley has been in the BIG3 basketball league since 2022, winning the championship in 2025 with Miami 305. And interviews like these, while heartbreaking, highlight his personal growth and prosperity over the years.
