Kansas State Wildcats defensive back Ja'Son Prevard is competing for playing time under first-year coach after transferring from the Virginia Cavaliers
Kansas State Wildcats coach Collin Klein has already said he plans to see open competition at every position except quarterback and running back.
Even though the Wildcats reeled in Virginia Cavaliers transfer Ja'Son Prevard, expect him to work for his starting spot as well. Earlier this week, Klein broke down what he has seen thus far in training camp.
"I think those two safety spots, it will be interesting to see how it shakes out because it is very competitive between Ja'Son, Logan Bartley, Wesley Fair, Adrian Maddox, even Koy Beasley a little bit. The combination of that and how that all fits together, it's good to have those options. I think we have an idea of where it's headed, but credit them. They're getting better and competing with each other well."
A 6-foot-2, 200-pound senior, Prevard was an honorable mention All-ACC selection last year. He had 24 tackles, three interceptions and eight passes defended. Even though Klein has yet to reveal a depth chart, it is believed Prevard will get one of the starting spots.
He was arguably the second-best get in the transfer portal behind defensive end Wendell Gregory, who comes over from the Oklahoma State Cowboys. Last year Gregory was the Big 12 Newcomer of the Year.
He is another player who is "competing" for a starting spot but will likely end up No. 1 on the depth chart.
CIRCLE THIS DATE ON CALENDAR
This is perhaps the most anticipated football season for the Kansas State Wildcats in recent years.
It marks the first year of the coach Collin Klein era. He replaced the successful Chris Klieman, who resigned unexpectedly following last year's 6-6 finish. A former Wildcats star, Klein has hopes of making them once again a contender in the Big 12 conference.
And fans can have their chance to meet Klein and the players Aug. 22 at the annual "Meet the Cats" event at Bill Snyder Family Stadium. Gates open at 11 a.m.
