The Kansas State Wildcats had a chance to win Saturday's game against the Colorado but chose to go into overtime before losing
Now, it's time to play Monday Morning Quarterback on a Sunday.
Everything has finally settled from the Kansas State Wildcats' 27-24 loss in overtime to the Colorado Buffaloes. The Wildcats impressively had a scoring drive in the final minute that resulted in a touchdown pass from quarterback Blake Barnett to tight end Garrett Oakley.
Kansas State trailed 21-20 with two seconds remaining before making a decision on the extra point. First-year coach Collin Klein had the option of going for the field goal to tie it and force overtime or go for the win with a two-point conversion attempt.
At first, it appeared Klein was going for the win in regulation. With the team lined up, Colorado coach Deion Sanders called for a timeout. And that was all Klein needed to see before switching to the one-attempt attempt.
After the game, Klein basically said he was confident in what play was called when they lined up for the two-point conversion. He changed his mind once the Buffaloes adjusted. The staff then made the decision to play for overtime.
It turned out to be a move that led to the Wildcats' second straight loss and fourth in the last five games. The Wildcats got the ball first but the drive ended with a short field goal. The Buffaloes then scored on their possession to pick up their first victory in Big 12 conference play this season.
K-State fans had different reactions, naturally, to Klein's decision. Some felt he should have chased the win in regulation. Others felt it was right to play it safe.
Here's my take:
I'm not a college football coach and will never claim to be but Klein probably should've went for the win in regulation. It's three yards. And it's better to get off the field as soon as possible, especially on the road.
The Wildcats were playing with a backup quarterback. They were on the ropes. The only goal was to escape Boulder by stealing a victory. Even after the timeout and adjusted, the Wildcats had a chance to do the same.
But here's the biggest reason why he should have gone for it. Klein was playing with house money. Even if it failed, it is doubtful the Wildcats fan base would have crucified him for doing this. It was a win in itself that Kansas State was even in the game after all the adversity at quarterback.
Klein was in a situation where he could have been the hero if they won or loss.
