The Latest Injury Update On Kansas State Wildcats LB Mehki Mason

The Kansas State Wildcats received some good news on the injury front this week.

On Monday, Wildcats coach Collin Klein gave the media an update on linebacker Mekhi Mason, who sustained an unknown lower body injury in Saturday's win against Nicholls at Bill Snyder Family Stadium.

Klein said Mason may return to the field sooner than later.

"I don't think it's going to be as bad as what was maybe initially thought," Klein said. "So, very, very positive on that front."

Mason had one solo tackle in the season opener. He transferred to Kansas State after playing at Louisiana Tech. He was a second-team All-Conference USA selection.

Mason is part of a linebacker unit that is trying to make up for the loss of All-Big 12 player Austin Romaine, who transferred to play for the Texas Tech Red Raiders. Mason started alongside Gabe Powers.

Many thought Rex Van Wyhe would be in the starting lineup but the coaching staff was really impressed by Mason during the spring and training camp. Klein is perhaps Mason's biggest fan.

He compared his play to former Wildcats star Arthur Brown, who was an All-American and the 2012 Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year. Brown, who played with Klein at K-State, is generally regarded one of the best players in school history.

"His twitch and snap to the football and instinct is special," Klein said. "To be at his size, have his level of physicality, while still having the ability to run in an inside backer position is like somebody I played with."

After losing to the Iowa State Cyclones in last year's opener in Ireland, the Wildcats are above .500 for the first time since the end of the 2024 season. They return to action Saturday to face the Washington State Cougars at home.

It is the second game of the Klein era. After facing the Tulane Green Wave the following week, the Wildcats open Big 12 play against the Cincinnati Bearcats.
