As Kansas State attempts to rebound from a disappointing 2025 season, one name will be highlighted: senior quarterback Avery Johnson.

The Wildcats signal-caller was anticipated to enter the next echelon alongside his conference peers and elevate Kansas State to a conference juggernaut. Lo and behold, he had an underwhelming season, seeing drops in nearly every statistical category. Johnson had 2,385 passing yards, 18 touchdowns, and six interceptions, rushing for 477 yards and eight touchdowns.

Some of the shortcomings were attributed to the conservative play-calling from offensive coordinator Matt Wells, but much of the blame was placed on Johnson. He looked hesitant to push the ball downfield at times and failed to get out of the pocket and truly lean into his dual-threat play style.

Thankfully, it's a new day in Manhattan, KS, and Johnson has his original play-caller back at the helm. With Collin Klein back in the program as the head coach and primary offensive shot-caller, Johnson is anticipated to have a career year in his final collegiate season.

"We’re able to build off of a large part of the foundation that was here before," Klein said in his spring ball presser. "I think it gives us a chance for a good head start. I’m really excited about our ability to package things for him, get on the same page, and think the same way. Then allow him to cut it loose, play fast, and use that competitive nature. I've watched him from a distance the last couple of years. I'm proud of how he’s handled things, and I'm really excited to be back on the same sideline."

Johnson wants to continue elevating the program to new heights, shifting the recent direction it went in 2025.

"There is unfinished business here, and I'm not done yet," Johnson said in his return statement on Instagram. "This place, this program, and this fanbase mean everything to me. The relationships I've built, the culture we've created, and the goals we still have ahead of us are too important to walk away from. I believe in this team. I believe in our coaches. And I believe the best is still ahead."
