Lance Does Something no Kansas Jayhawks Head Coach Has Supposedly Ever Done
Lance Leipold’s struggles against Kansas State continue to define his tenure with the Kansas Jayhawks, as another loss in the Sunflower Showdown has added to one of the most frustrating stretches in program history.
Kansas fell 35-24 to Kansas State on Oct. 17 at Bill Snyder Family Stadium in Manhattan, extending the Wildcats’ winning streak in the rivalry to 18 consecutive games. The defeat also dropped Leipold to 0-6 against Kansas State since taking over the Jayhawks in 2021, leaving him without a victory in the rivalry. (Sports Illustrated)
The numbers highlight just how difficult the matchup has been for Kansas. Kansas State has not lost to the Jayhawks since 2008, and the streak has continued through multiple coaching changes in Lawrence. Leipold is the latest Kansas coach unable to find an answer against the Wildcats, making the rivalry a significant concern for a program trying to establish consistent success.
However, the claim that Leipold has the most losses of any Kansas head coach in Sunflower Showdown history needs context. His six losses to Kansas State are a substantial total, but the historical record spans numerous coaches and eras. His winless record against the Wildcats is the clearest measure of his struggles
The latest defeat was particularly painful because Kansas had opportunities to take control of the game. The Jayhawks held a 17-7 lead during the first half before special-teams mistakes helped shift the momentum. A safety following a mishandled punt snap gave Kansas State two points, and the Wildcats added a field goal to take an 18-17 halftime lead.
Kansas briefly regained the advantage after halftime, but turnovers and missed opportunities eventually allowed Kansas State to pull away.
Leipold has also acknowledged the importance of the rivalry to Kansas fans. Ahead of the matchup, he admitted that he had not always given the game enough recognition for what it means to people outside the program, while emphasizing that the Jayhawks understand the pride and bragging rights involved.
That acknowledgment matters, but results ultimately determine how coaches are judged in rivalry games. Kansas fans have waited nearly two decades to celebrate a victory over their in-state opponent, and Leipold has yet to deliver one.
As the Jayhawks look toward their remaining schedule, ending the rivalry drought will remain a major goal. Leipold has helped Kansas achieve meaningful progress in other areas, but until the Jayhawks defeat Kansas State, questions about his approach to the Sunflower Showdown will continue.
