With the Jayhawks eyeing the 2026-27 season, Bill Self targets frontcourt reinforcements while rising stars Paul Mbiya and Cole Pearson emerge as pivotal leaders during summer workouts.
Bill Self Says Kansas' Roster Isn't Finished Despite Strong Summer
Bill Self likes the progress Kansas has made this summer, but he isn't ready to call the Jayhawks' roster complete.
Speaking Wednesday, Self said Kansas continues to evaluate potential additions before the start of the 2026-27 season, particularly in the frontcourt as Christian Reeves recovers from injury.
"I think we could. ... Our roster is not set. It may be over, but we're still investigating different opportunities."
Self said adding another big man remains a possibility because of the team's current depth.
"One of the things that we do want to try to do is get a big just because of the situation with Christian and depth."
Reeves is expected to be ready for the regular season, although Self said he will likely spend part of the preseason working his way back into full-contact action.
"Should he be ready by season? Full speed? Absolutely... when he comes back, we're hopeful he's five-on-zero full speed, just no contact."
Self also discussed several players who have impressed during offseason workouts.
Transfer forward Paul Mbiya has emerged as a candidate to open the season in the starting lineup.
"He's had a good summer. He's improved a lot. He's a lot more confident and playing bigger... the last week or so of summer, he showed us all something that we hadn't seen yet."
Another player drawing praise is sophomore Cole Pearson, who Self believes is poised for a significant leap after being thrust into action too early last season.
"He was terrific early season and you put him in a situation that he should be a high school senior and it was a little too much too quick. We won't have that issue this year."
Self said Pearson's leadership has become one of his biggest strengths.
"He's probably as good a vocal leader and he's about all the right stuff."
Kansas players are now away from campus for a four-week break before returning later in August, giving the coaching staff additional time to evaluate the roster and determine whether another addition is needed before preseason practice begins.
