Clements steps up, channeling newfound confidence and vocal leadership to energize the Kansas offensive line this spring.

Kansas offensive tackle Calvin Clements is embracing a bigger role this spring, and by all accounts, it’s been a smooth transition.

“It’s been good. I’ve really been enjoying it,” Clements said. “Honestly, it’s the most football I’ve played in a while… just enjoying it, having fun, being confident out there.”

That confidence is showing up not just in his play, but in his presence. After starting last season, Clements said his offseason conversations with the coaching staff centered on two key areas: development and leadership.

“A big part of it was leadership — taking that step to kind of take over the room,” he said. “That was a big focus.”

So far, he believes that emphasis has translated.

“We put a lot of focus on it through the offseason… now that we’ve been able to get on the field, it’s been fun to really get hands-on with it.”

For Clements, growth as a leader has meant stepping outside his comfort zone, especially vocally.

“Definitely being more vocal,” he said. “Understanding that it was going to have to be us to step into that role.”

While Clements is taking on more responsibility, he’s not doing it alone. He praised the new additions to the offensive line room for bringing energy and maturity.

“I love them. They’re all super level-headed guys… fun to lead, fun to hang out with.”

He specifically highlighted a few newcomers making early impressions.

“Nick has been super fun… he’s got really good feet,” Clements said. “Conor Stro is a huge dude, but he can move… puts out a lot of effort. Kase has done a good job stepping into a leadership role too.”

Still, the adjustment hasn’t been without challenges.

“In the weight room, it was easy… just being vocal,” he said. “But on the field, it’s harder. You can’t have eyes everywhere… I had to remind myself to stay vocal.”

One constant helping guide the group is offensive coordinator Andy Kotelnicki.

“I love Coach K,” Clements said. “He’s a great football mind… we all feel very confident behind him.”

With spring underway, Clements is settling into his role, and bringing the offensive line with him.
