Clifton Thompson Gives Kansas Football Another Defensive Line Option
Kansas football has added another piece to its defensive line as Central Connecticut State transfer Clifton Thompson has committed to the Jayhawks, giving Lance Leipold and his staff another interior option heading into the rest of the 2026 season.
Thompson's addition comes at an important time for Kansas. The Jayhawks have already dealt with a significant loss along the defensive front after Tre'Von McAlpine was ruled out for the season before the opener. Kansas has relied on players such as Blake Herold, Eamon Smalls, Marcus Calvin and Kevin Oatis while also giving true freshman Na'Kwaine Carter opportunities.
Thompson now provides another body that could help Kansas manage its defensive line rotation as the season continues.
The circumstances surrounding Thompson's move to Kansas are different from a traditional transfer. Thompson recently became involved as a plaintiff in an Indiana five-year eligibility lawsuit against the NCAA. In that filing, Thompson indicated that, if he became eligible, Kansas or California could be potential destinations.
When asked about the possibility of adding a player under circumstances like Thompson's, Leipold did not specifically discuss Thompson but acknowledged that college football has changed significantly with the transfer portal, eligibility cases and other roster-related issues.
“Right now, I guess in this new era of what we’re doing, depending on the circumstance, you’ll never say never anymore,” Leipold said.
Leipold also pointed out that there are still several factors that have to be worked through before a situation like this becomes official.
“There’s a lot of hoops to go through, there’s a lot of reasons, and we have to feel confident that there’s something that isn’t going to be reversed back in a countersuit and all those things,” Leipold said.
For Kansas, Thompson's arrival would add depth to a position group that has already been asked to handle a heavy workload. The Jayhawks' defensive line played well against Arizona State despite the team's 24-17 loss in London. Kansas held the Sun Devils to 228 total yards and 3.5 yards per play, while forcing nine punts on 14 Arizona State drives.
Leipold praised the defensive line after the performance, saying the group “really dominated the line of scrimmage.”
With Kansas preparing to return from its bye week and begin a stretch of nine consecutive games, Thompson could give the Jayhawks another option up front if he is cleared to play. For a team that has already experienced injuries along the defensive line, adding another interior presence could become an important part of Kansas' plans moving forward.
